Ross Ray

Ross Edgar Ray, 92, Winchester, formerly of Leavenworth, died Jan. 19, 2010, at the Senior Living Center in Winchester.

He was born Nov. 21, 1917, at Newton, the son of William Howard and Margaret Ross Ray. He was a 1937 graduate of Winchester High School.

He worked as a meat cutter for 63 years, working at Winchester and Easton locker plants, the Kroger Store in Leavenworth, and at the Ft. Leavenworth Commissary, where he retired in 1981.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany.

He was a member of the Winchester United Methodist Church.

He married Carmen E. Strange in 1939 at Winchester. They divorced.

Survivors include one son, Ross C. “Bud” Ray, Winchester; one daughter, B. “Joan” Scales, Lynden, Wash.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald H. Ray and Charles H. Ray.

Funeral services were Jan. 22 at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. Burial was at Winchester-Wise Cemetery.

Eloise Carter

Eloise Wray Carter, 88, Overland Park, died Jan. 19, 2010, at Delmar Gardens.

She was born Sept. 15, 1921, in McLouth, to Albert and Mabel Wray.

She married Donald D. Carter May 2, 1941, in Kansas City. He survives.

She was a member of the Overland Park Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Dean Carter, in 2008 and two sisters, Mary White and Erma Kervin in 2009.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Barker, Mission Hills; sister, Sandra Haar, Kansas City; two brothers, Thomas Wray, Great Bend, and Jordan Wray, Las Vegas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Jan. 25 at the Overland Park Presbyterian Church..

Memorial contributions can be made to either the church or Odyssey Hospice-Healthcare. The Amos Family Chapel, Shawnee, was in charge of arrangements.

Cecile Luse

Cecile Fowler Luse, 99, Oskaloosa, formerly of Hutchinson, died Jan. 24, 2010, at Oskaloosa.

She was born Nov. 24, 1910, at McLouth, the daughter of Charles L. and Helen Means Fowler.

She was married to Eugene E. Luse Dec. 23, 1933, at McLouth. He preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1985.

She was graduate of Kansas State Teacher’s College, Emporia, earning her master’s degree in library science in 1968. She taught schools in McLouth, Waverly, Greensburg and Meade, and retired as the dean of the library at Hutchinson Community College in 1976.

She is survived by one daughter, Ann Luse Davis, Oskaloosa; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Tom Luse, in 2000.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. The family will receive friends and relatives from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the services. Burial will be at McLouth Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Jefferson County Humane Society and sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Walter Bergsten

Walter “Walt” Bergsten, 89, Manhattan, died Jan. 22, 2010, in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born Dec. 23, 1920, at Randolph, the son of Roy Bergsten and Anna Peterson Bergsten. He grew up on the family farm, east of Randolph in Pottawatomie County, and attended the local schools. He was a graduate of the Randolph High School.

He married Geneva Johnson Oct. 29, 1944, at Randolph. She preceded him in death September 1991.

Mr. Bergsten owned and operated the Valley Falls Lumber Yard for over 50 years. He retired in 1995 and had been a Manhattan resident since October 2009.

He was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church and a member of the Lions and Rotary clubs, all of Valley Falls. He served on the Valley Falls city council.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bergsten was preceded in death by an infant son, Eric Carl Bergsten.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Nemechek, Manhattan; and one grandson.

Funeral services were Jan. 26 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial was in the Randolph Fancy Creek Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association; the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter; or the Jefferson County District No. 11 EMS and left in care of the funeral home.

Robert Lee Tichenor

Robert Lee Tichenor, 95, longtime resident of Valley Falls and most recently a resident at Atria Homes in Topeka, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Midland Hospice in Topeka, Kansas.

Lee was born on Jan. 11, 1915, at Whitman, Nebraska, to C.R. and Elizabeth Tichenor. He graduated from Hyannis High School and later moved with his family to Kansas.

Lee married Lola Rolin on March 30, 1941 at Muddy Creek Church, north of Meriden, and they operated a dairy farm for many years near Valley Falls.

Lee and Lola were founding members of Calvary Baptist Church in Valley Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Lola, Topeka; four daughters, Lucy (Robert) Benortham of Overbrook, Karla (Jerry) Alkire of Derby, Nora (Daniel) Lovely of Norwalk, IA, and Mary (Steve) Shipps of Topeka; a brother, Roy Tichenor, and two sisters, Ruby Carter and Beth Quigley, all of Topeka; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Lee was well known and admired for his love for God, family, and music. His life was a legacy and an inspiration to all those he touched. To say that he will be missed is greatly understated.

The funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at Calvary Baptist Church in Valley Falls. Burial was at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation was at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday.

Paid obituary

Donald Kellogg

Donald K. Kellogg, 70, Grantville, died Jan. 22, 2010.

He was born March 13, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Lloyd L. and Bessie B. Whitsit Kellogg. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Kellogg was employed by the city of Topeka, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Grantville United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, Praise Band and the Perry American Legion Post. No. 142.

He married Roberta M. Peak Jan. 12, 1964, in Oelwein, Iowa. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Nicola Tebbutt, a son, Douglas Kellogg, and three grandchildren, all of Topeka; a brother, Darrell Kellogg, Des Moines; and a sister, Alice Williams, Jacksonville, Ark.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were Jan. 26 at the Grantville United Methodist Church. Cremation followed and private inurnment at Grantville Cemetery will be at a later date.

Dollie Shrimplin

Dollie Shrimplin, 78, died at Applewood Living Center, Longmont, Colo., Jan. 24, 2010.

She was born in Valencia, the daughter of Paul J. and Helen M. Miller. She attended schools in Topeka and Provo, Utah.

She married Lloyd Donald “Don” Shrimplin July 25, 1952, at Galveston, Texas. Shortly after, they returned to Topeka where Dollie was a waitress at the Purple Cow Restaurant in the Kansan Hotel. She also cared for other people’s homes before becoming a full-time homemaker.

The couple moved to Perry and eventually made their home of 18 years in Valley Falls. After Don’s death, she moved back to Topeka until her health prompted a move to Longmont, to be near her daughter. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Topeka.

Survivors include a daughter, Dawn Elmore, Longmont; three sisters, Francis Bridges, Shawnee Mission, Helen Miller, Topeka, and Charlene VanDaley, Sommers Point, N.J.; and one brother, Paul Miller, Anderson, Calif.

A visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by a service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman, Longmont. Cremation will follow the service and burial will be at the Valley Falls Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials can be made to the Parkinson’s Association, the Jefferson County EMS District 11 at Valley Falls, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
