Mary Moffitt

Mary A. Moffitt, 88, died Dec. 22, 2007, at Lexington Park Care Center in Topeka.

She was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Topeka, the daughter of Leslie M. and Cecil Stuart Waggoner.

She was raised in Oskaloosa where she graduated from high school. She attended the University of Kansas. She worked as a case worker and later as director of the Jefferson County Department of Social Welfare, then became secretary to attorneys William C. Leech and Gary L. Nafziger. She was also employed by Finley Abstract Co., all in Oskaloosa.

In 1992 she and her husband moved to Topeka. She was an active member of Crestview United Methodist Church, Topeka; a member of Oskaloosa Chapter No. 62 OES; and was a charter and life member of the Jefferson County Historical Society. She participated in a number of volunteer assignments, most recently at Stormont-Vail Hospital and the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library.

She married Lawrence N. “Lonnie” Moffitt in 1958. He preceded her in death Jan. 30, 2001. Survivors include her brother, Gene S. Waggoner, Edwardsville; a daughter, Sally Myers, Topeka; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Memorial services were held at Crestview United Methodist Church in Topeka in the morning and at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa in the afternoon Dec. 29. Inurnment will be at a later date at Pleasant View Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Memorial contributions can be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission Inc. and sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Ruth Young

Margee Ruth Pence Reynolds Young, 77, died Dec. 22, 2007, at Medicallodges of Leavenworth.

She was born at Oskaloosa Feb. 4, 1930, on the second wedding anniversary of her parents, Edwin and Ester Fulton Pence. She grew up in Jefferson County, where she met and married Lewis E. “Flupe” Reynolds Nov. 23, 1950. They raised their children in Leavenworth. They were active with the Leavenworth County Foster Parents Association. Mr. Reynolds preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1977.

She married Art Young June 13, 1981, at Leavenworth and moved to Denver, where they lived before returning to Leavenworth in 1990. He survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, Greg Young, Bloomfield, Colo., Mike Young, Leavenworth, Karen Dupont, Denver, Debby Perak, Dallas, Dan Young, Olathe, and seven grandchildren; her daughter, JoAnn Verhaeghe, Overland Park; sons, Ken Reynolds, Monument, Colo., Tom Reynolds, Gladstone, Mo., and John Reynolds, Denver; 10 Reynolds grandchildren; brothers, Charles Pence, Winchester, and Richard Pence, The Villages, Fla. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest, a daughter, Margee Lou, and a granddaughter, Rebecca Reynolds.

Mass of Christian Burial was Dec. 27 at St. Francis DeSales Church in Lansing. Burial was at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Rebbecca Reynolds Scholarship fund at Monument (Colo.) High School or to St. Francis DeSales Church, or to the organization of donor’s choice and sent in care of Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Roma Nave

Roma Rose Nave, 96, Tonganoxie, died Dec. 23, 2007, at Jefferson County Geriatric Center, Winchester.

She was born July 5, 1911, in Tonganoxie, the daughter of Ernest and Ottielie Meyer Wenger.

She married Stanley Nave Sept. 28, 1940. He preceded her in death April 13, 2000. Survivors include one son, Joseph Nave, McLouth; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services were Dec. 26 at Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Debbie Williams

A celebration of the life of Debbie McAfee Williams, 51, Everton, Ark., who lost the battle with cancer, was held Dec. 22.

She leaves behind her husband, Randy; her parents, Eldon and Naomi Westphal McAfee, Harrison, Ark.; and two brothers, Ron McAfee, Harrison, and Scott McAfee, Columbia, Mo. Debbie was preceded in death by a brother, Dean. He died in November 2006 at the age of 48 as a result of a hunting accident.

Eldon and Naomi McAfee grew up in the McLouth area and graduated from McLouth High School. Debbie’s maternal grandparents are the late Neil and Pauline Westphal of McLouth and paternal grandparents are the late Lacy and Marie McAfee of the McLouth and Winchester communities. Her aunts and uncles in the Winchester, Oskaloosa and Tonganoxie communities are Larry and Sharon McAfee Stevens, Jack and Pat Westphal, and Jerry and Winnie Westphal Groshong.

Larry and Sharon, along with Marge McAfee Rathert and Glenda Clisso went to visit Debbie in Harrison two weeks prior to her death.
