Garnette Dent

   Garnette A. Dent, 88, Topeka, died Oct. 6, 2008, in Topeka. 
    She was born April 13, 1920, in Topeka, the daughter of Lyle W. and Carolyn McCay Miller.
    She was a graduate of Topeka High School and the Jane C. Stormont School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse in Topeka and retired from Memorial Hospital in 1980.
    She moved to Perry from Silver Lake in 1957 and to Lake Dabinawa in rural McLouth in 1984.  She has resided at Brewster Place since 1998.
    She was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church for 47 years, a 50-year life member of Loyal Chapter No. 176 Order of the Eastern Star, the Perry American Legion Auxiliary, Lawrence Eagles Lodge No. 309 Auxiliary, Topeka Chapter Women of the Moose Lodge No. 1091, and the Jane C. Stormont Alumni Association.
    She married Roy Edward Dent Sept. 20, 1942. He died May 17, 1992.
    Survivors include a daughter, Royce Dent, Papillion, Neb.; a son, Donald Dent, Kapolei, Hawaii; four grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were Oct. 13 at Perry United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Joyce Virgin
     Joyce Marie Ferrell Virgin, 87, Carlisle, Pa., and formerly of Columbia, Md., died Oct. 13, 2008, in the Thornwald Home at Carlisle.
     She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Valley Falls, the daughter of James and Minnie Graham Ferrell.
    She went to a one-room school house in rural Valley Falls and attended Kansas State’s Teacher College in Emporia. She taught in a one-room school in Kansas and upon marrying her husband moved to Michigan.
    She moved quite often with her husband and family in the Midwest.  She has lived in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, Maryland and recently moved to a nursing facility near her daughter in Carlisle, Pa. 
    She was the widow of William Edward Virgin.
     Surviving are her daughter, Coanne Evelyn Virgin O’Hern, Carlisle; two sons, William Edward Virgin, Freeland, Mich., and Duane Louis Virgin, Burbank, Calif.; and six grandchildren. 
    She was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.
     Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
     Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover St., Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements.

Leonard Hysten
    Leonard Wayne Hysten, 83, Ozawkie, died Oct. 10, 2008, at the home of his daughter in Whiting.
    He was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Ozawkie,  the son of Fred and Zephyr Archer Hysten. 
    Mr. Hysten was a farmer. He attended Ozawkie High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. 
    He was a member of the Williamstown Assembly of God Church and the American Legion Post 225 in Ozawkie.
    Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Elaine Hysten, Topeka, and Irene Malia Ross, Whiting; two brothers, John Hysten, Ozawkie, and Lloyd Hysten, Topeka; two sisters, Evelyn Fischer, Ozawkie, and Mary L. Shepard, Lawrence; one grand-daughter; and three great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Williamstown Assembly of God Church. Burial with American Legion honors will follow at the Ozawkie Cemetery.
    A viewing and visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Barnett Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
    Memorials can be made to the Williamstown Assembly of God Church and sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Herman McAfee
    Herman E. McAfee, 83, Coffeyville, died Oct. 12, 2008,  at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.
    He was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Winchester, the son of Lacy and Marie  Dixon McAfee. He attended school at Valley Falls until the age of 17. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1946 as a gunner’s  mate, Petty Officer 3rd Class.
    He married Esther Van Druff July 15, 1944, in Valley Falls. She survives.
    Mr. McAfee was employed as a rancher working in Jefferson County, Madison, Longton,  Sedan, and Independence and Pawhuska, Okla., until his retirement 1997  when they moved to Caney.
    Also surviving are his children, Gloria McAfee, Hugo, Okla., Richard McAfee, Caney, Kenneth McAfee, Madill, Okla., and Judith Whitson,  Coffeyville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and siblings  James, Marge, Donald, Norma, Eldon, Russell, and Sharon.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth.
    Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at  McLouth Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the  service at the Quisenberry Funeral Home, 4th and  Delaware, Tonganoxie.
    Memorial contributions can be given to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and sent in care of  Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 2405 Woodland Avenue, Coffeyville, 67337.
