Jessie Mae Jackson, 81, Clifton, died Aug. 6, 2008, at her home. She was born June 15, 1927, at El Paso Texas, the daughter of Jesse and Della Dalton Sutherlin. She worked for the Washington County SRS Office. She was a scorekeeper for the Clifton ball games, and was a member of the Clifton American Legion Auxiliary for 40 years. She was preceded in death by a son, Willard "Rusty" Jackson, a granddaughter, and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Jesse "Shorty" Jackson, Clay Center, and Kerry Jackson, Meriden; seven grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. A private family service will be held at a later date. A memorial fund will be designated later by the family and can be sent in care of the Turner Funeral Home, 918 7th Street, Clay Center, 67432. Lela Wilson Lela Louise Wilson, 79, Scranton, died Aug. 7, 2008, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. She was born July 15, 1929, at Meriden, the daughter of Herbert Leon and Flossie May Chapman Clark. She had lived in Scranton many years. Mrs. Wilson worked as a bookkeeper for the Pelletiers Department store in Topeka for many years. She had also worked in the Scranton school district as a cook and assisted her husband in farming. She was an American Kennel Association licensed breeder and operated a kennel for many years. She was a 1947 graduate of Meriden High School. She married John Nelson Wilson March 22, 1953, at Meriden. He survives. Other survivors include one son, Jerry Wilson, and a daughter, Darlene Shively, both of Scranton; two brothers, Vernon K. Clark, Denison, and Daryl Clark, Topeka; one sister, Lola Penry, Meriden; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Clark. Funeral services were Aug. 12 at the Meriden United Methodist Church. Burial was at Meriden Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Lela L. Wilson Memorial Fund and sent in care of Barnett-Chapel Oaks Meriden Chapel, P.O. Box 331, Meriden, 66512. Margaret Self Margaret L. Self, 88, Muscotah, died Aug. 8, 2008. She was born Oct. 11, 1919, at Grantville, the daughter of Ivan and Susan Yenkey Beeler. She grew up at Grantville and Meriden and attended school at Milligan School and Meriden High School. She attended Dodd Business School in Topeka and worked for the Soil Conservation Office in Oskaloosa. After she married, she helped her husband farm at Ozawkie until the government bought their farm when Perry Lake was constructed. They moved to Muscotah in 1965 and had farmed there since. She married Benjamin H. Self Nov. 6, 1940, at Reserve. He preceded her in death Jan. 28, 1996. Other survivors include three children, Larry Self and Tim Self, both of Muscotah, and Rita Smith, Holton; a sister, Elizabeth Trimble, Topeka; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, Gerald "Verne" Self in 1960, a brother, Robert Beeler, and a sister, Virginia Camblin. Funeral services were Aug. 12 at the Meriden Community Church. Interment was in Meriden Cemetery. George Stockwell George Lewis Stockwell died Aug. 9, 2008, after a struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was born in Valley Falls Sept. 24, 1928, to William and Anna Jaqua Stockwell. He graduated from Valley Falls High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force and Reserves. Attending college at Washburn University, he earned a doctorate of law, and then became a member of both the Kansas and Texas bar associations. By the end of his career, he had become an expert in the field of banking law. He also had experience in real estate lending, grain operations, construction, ranching, international business, negotiation, business analysis, setting up and operating joint ventures. He served on various boards, most notably the Dallas Area Parkinson's Society, and also taught banking law and spoke at numerous engagements in his field. He is survived by his wife, Delia, of 55 years; children, Gayle Stockwell, Craig Stockwell, Barbra Judge and Dan Stockwell; five grandchildren; and one brother, Delbert Stockwell, Wichita. A memorial service was held Aug. 13 at Restland Memorial Chapel. Memorial donations can be made to the Dallas Area Parkinson's Society, 6370 L.B.J. Freeway Suite 176, Dallas, 75240. The Restland Funeral Home in Dallas was in charge of arrangements. James Spielman James W. "Jim" Spielman, 60, rural Ozawkie, died Aug. 10, 2008, at his home. He was born Aug. 20, 1947, at Topeka, the son of Lewis J. and Betty Louise Woodard Spielman. He had lived in the Ozawkie area all his life. He was a heavy equipment operator for many years. He was a member of Union Local No. 101 of Operating Engineers in Topeka and a 1966 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. He married Juanita Louise Adams Ditch May 14, 2001, at Oskaloosa. She survives at the home. Also surviving are one son, Robert W. Spielman, Ozawkie; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Spielman, Oskaloosa; two sisters, Sherry L. Seifert, Ozawkie, and Patricia A. Courtney, Oskaloosa. Cremation is planned. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. A graveside inurnment service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Memorials can be made to Jefferson County Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066. Wilbur Schmidt Wilbur W. "Bill" Schmidt, 76, Kansas City, Mo., died Aug. 9, 2008, at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was born Oct. 8, 1931, at Philadelphia, the son of Wilbur R. and Jane Kaul Schmidt. He grew up in McLouth and was a 1949 graduate of McLouth High School. He attended the University of Kansas and earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and returned to KU to earn a law degree in 1958. He was employed in the trust department of UMB Bank in Kansas City for 35 years, retiring in 1994 as a senior vice president. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity at KU, and a member of the McLouth United Methodist Church. He is survived by a sister Betty Jane Lavenbarg, Belton, Mo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip Schmidt. Graveside services were Aug. 13 at the McLouth Cemetery, McLouth. Memorials can be made to St. Luke's Hospital Foundation, 4225 Baltimore, Kansas City, Mo. 64111 or to the McLouth United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 159, McLouth, 66054.
