Cody Horton

Cody Mark Horton, 52, Perry, died July 23, 2008, from injuries received in a work related accident near Tonganoxie in Leavenworth County.

He was born Jan. 7, 1956, at Miami, Okla., the son of Herbert Lee and Ramona Lee Henderson Horton. He had lived in the Perry area since 1968.

Cody had worked as an equipment operator for Capital Electric Line Builder's Company for 35 years and was a member of I.B.E.W. Union local No. 304 in Topeka. He was a member of the Prairie Band Pottawattomie Tribe in Mayetta, and a life member of the "Horton Mafia."

He was a 1974 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School and attended Vo-Tech School in Topeka.

He married Inez Marie Jones Sept. 16, 1989 at Perry. She survives at the home. Other survivors include a step-son, Dusty Cottrell, Topeka; a son, Cody Joseph Horton, of the home; three daughters, Darian Rohr, Wichita, and Tiffany Marie Horton and Stephanie Inez Horton, both of the home; two brothers, Shawn Horton, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Kim Horton, Lawrence; four sisters, Sharon Ripperger and Cindy Horton, both of Galena, Mo., Novale Tyner, Lawrence, and Jill Bleil, Leavenworth; and three grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service was July 26 at the Perry American Legion Post No. 142 in Perry. Memorials can be made to the Horton Children's Education fund and sent in care of Lawrence Funeral Chapel, 3821 W. 6th Street, Lawrence, 66049 or to Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416 Oskaloosa, 66066.

Doris Sabo

Doris Jane Sabo, 73, died July 13, 2008, at her home in Topeka. She was born May 29, 1935, in Arrington.

She spent most of her childhood there with her five brothers and sisters. She attended Atchison County Community High School and graduated in 1953. After marrying Roy Sabo, she spent many years traveling with the Air Force.

She was preceded in death by her husband, sister, Helen, and daughter Janelle. She is survived by her son, Scott Sabo; five grandchildren; sisters, Judy Hedden and Cora Rathert; brothers, Gene Abramson and Charles Abramson.

The funeral service was at Larkinburg Cemetery in Larkinburg July 22. Parker-Price Funeral Home, Topeka, was in charge of arrangements.

Tony Petersen

Tony R. Petersen, 52, Topeka, died July 24, 2008, at Stormont-Vail Hospital. He was born Aug. 23, 1955, in Topeka, the son of Leland H. and Leah Spiker Petersen.

He attended Highland Park High School in Topeka. He was a taxi cab driver for Capitol City Taxi in Topeka. He had been a farmer and stockman at Granada and Holton.

Survivors include a brother, Duane L. Petersen, Perry; two sisters, Vicki Umscheid, Perry, and Kris Serrault, Topeka.

A funeral service was July 30 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Cremation followed the service and burial will be at the Netawaka Cemetery at a later date. Memorials can be given to Tony R. Petersen Memorial Fund and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, 66436.

James Drinkard

James Thomas Drinkard, 84, Nortonville, died July 23, 2008, at his home. Mr. Drinkard was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Trenton, Mo., the son of Richard Lee and Ruth Keith Fauver Drinkard.

He served in the U.S. Army as a switchboard operator during World War II. Mr. Drinkard had worked for the former Missouri Valley Steel Company, We-Mac Manufacturing, and as a welder for the railroad car repair department of Lincoln Grain, Atchison. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1175, Atchison, and enjoyed horses and traditional farming using horse-drawn teams.

He married Betty Snyder April 22, 1943, in Galion, Ohio. They lived in rural Nortonville for over 39 years. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include seven sons, James Drinkard, Eagle, Colo., Keith Drinkard, Oskaloosa, Eric Drinkard, Denison, Michael Drinkard, St. Joseph, Mo., Paul Drinkard, Broomall, Pa., Charles Drinkard, Atchison, and Jeff Drinkard, Atchison; six daughters, Margaret Schmidt, Salina, Jackie Bulger, Lawrence, Liz Wagner, Anahuac, Texas, Becky Moore, St. Joseph, Mo., Rachel Widen, Concordia, and Cathy Lark, New Lenox, Ill.; one sister, Frances Loncarich, Walker, Mo.; 39 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A son, David Drinkard, and sisters Mary Lyons, Helen Skirvin, Caroline Yerkey, and Margaret Mitchell preceded him in death.

Funeral services were July 26 at the Nortonville Christian Church. Burial was in the Hart Cemetery, Nortonville. Memorial contributions are suggested to help with funeral expenses. The O'Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, was in charge of arrangements.

Frances L. Jolliff

Frances L. Jolliff, 85, Oskaloosa, died July 24, 2008, at Hickory Pointe Care Center in Oskaloosa. Mrs. Jolliff was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Roy and L'Nora Davis.

A former resident of Kansas City, she was a member and financial secretary for Grinter Chapel United Methodist Church before she and her husband moved to Oskaloosa in 1978. They joined the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church after moving. She worked in food service for the Oskaloosa School District where she retired in 2002 after working 20 years.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Howard B. Jolliff of the home; a son, Roy T. Jolliff, Independence, Mo.; daughters, Dorothy L. Collins, Basehor, and Patricia L. Jones, Oskaloosa; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held July 28 at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, Kansas City. Interment was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions can be made to Jefferson County Hospice.
