Arlene C. Hawk, 86, Kansas City, formerly of the Ozawkie area, died July 15, 2008, at the Medical Lodge of Kansas City. She was born Jan. 16, 1922, at Ozawkie, the daughter of Harry Otis and Mattie Mae Newell Hawk. Miss Hawk worked many years in the Medical Lodge Laundry and was a member of the Community Christian Church, both in Kansas City. She was preceded in death by a sister, Odessa Dick, and a brother, Jessie Marlin Hawk. She is survived by two nephews, Marlin Dick, Gardner, and Dale Hawk, Oskaloosa. Funeral services were July 18 at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. Burial was at the Fairview Cemetery, northwest of Oskaloosa. Doris Cole Doris M. Cole, 77, Topeka, died at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence July 16, 2008. She was born Jan. 2, 1931, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, the daughter of Ivan D. and Fannie R. Morrison Thompson. She graduated from Seaman High School in 1949. She married Kenneth L. Cole at the First United Methodist Church in Topeka Aug. 31, 1950, and lived north of Topeka and the Hoyt area for many years. He preceded her in death in August 2007. She was a member of Northland Christian Church. She moved to Lawrence in 2000 to be closer to her children. Through her life she worked as a bank teller, a postal worker, a receptionist, and an office manager before retiring from Fairlawn Plaza in 1994. She is survived by her sons, Terry L. Cole, Lenexa, Mark D. Cole, Duvall, Wash., and Tod E. Cole, Lawrence; two grandchildren; one sister, Darleen Thompson in Massachusetts; two brothers, Ivan D. Thompson, Topeka, and Gary Thompson, Oskaloosa. A brother, Steven Thompson, also preceded her in death. Funeral services were July 22 at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Interment was in Rochester Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Heart of America Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home, 1035 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, 66608. Leo Gellings Jr. Leo James Gellings Jr., 49, Topeka, died July 17, 2008, at Stormont-Vail Hospital. He was born in Topeka, July 15, 1959, the son of Leo James Gellings Sr. and Barbara Jean Jackson Gellings. He worked as a machine operator for Hallmark Cards for several years and also for TARC and Sheltered Living. He is survived by a daughter, Karen Acuna, Chandler, Ariz.; three sons, Ben Gellings, Adam Gellings, and Dustin Gellings, all of Topeka; one grandson; his parents of Ozawkie; and a brother, Robert Gellings, Ozawkie. Mr. Gellings was cremated. Graveside inurnment was July 22 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 West Sixth Ave., Topeka, 66603. Everett Bowen Everett William Bowen, 90, died July 21, 2008, at Deer Park North Senior Home near Meriden. He was the oldest son of Omar Addison and Ellen Florence Berg Bowen, born Sept. 1, 1917, three miles north of Rock Creek. When he was 1 year old, the family moved to a farm 1 1/2 miles northeast of Meriden where he grew up. He finished the first through eighth grades at Dix, a one-room schoolhouse, which adjoined their farm. He finished two years of Meriden Rural High School. He married Gladys Lenora Bowles Sept. 7, 1939, in Meriden. She preceded him in death Aug. 31, 1994. They moved to Circleville, Ohio, for a few years and ran a hamburger shop. They returned to the farm near Meriden and farmed until 1949 when Everett built a house on the east edge of Meriden where they lived the rest of their lives. He worked in the carpentry trade and built numerous new homes in the Meriden and Ozawkie area. He was a charter member of the Meriden Antique Engine and Threshers' Association and was the sawmill operator. He was a charter member of the Early Days Gas Engine and Tractor Association branch 19 in Kansas City. The couple was active in the Grange. He is survived by a brother, Elmer Bowen, Bella Vista, Ark.; a son, Gary Bowen, Meriden; a daughter, Connie McDaniel, Topeka; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, at the Meriden Community Church. Interment will follow in the Meriden Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Memorial contributions can be made to the Meriden Antique Engine and Threshers' Association and sent in care of the funeral home. Clyde Tryon Clyde D. Tryon, 88, a long-time resident of Perry, died at his home July 14, 2008. He was born Dec. 29, 1919, at Wheaton, the son of Corbin John and Emma Jean Swickard Tryon. He was a 1937 graduate of Perry Rural High School. He attended Emporia State Teacher's College and Kansas State University. He was a U.S. Army-Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving throughout the Pacific Campaign. He was stationed on the island of Saipan and flew many missions as a gunner on B-29 bombers. During his time of service, he married Retha Ellen Dick Aug. 9, 1942, at the home of her parents in Perry. She survives of the home. After returning from military service, Mr. Tryon worked as an electrician at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Topeka, retiring in September 1979 after 32 years He served eight years on the Perry City Council and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. He recently received plaques honoring his 60 years as an active member of Perry American Legion Post No. 142 and Perry Masonic Lodge No. 415 A.F.& A.M. He was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church and the Golden Pizza Coffee Club. Other survivors include a son, Dennis D. Tryon, Ozawkie; a daughter, Carol Chelton, Houston, Texas; a brother, Charles Tryon, Marysville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were July 17 at Perry United Methodist Church. Burial with Legion military honors and Masonic services were at Oak Ridge Cemetery at Perry. Memorials can be made to the Perry United Methodist Church or to Perry American Legion Post No. 142 or to Perry Masonic Lodge No. 415 and sent in care of Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.
