Fred N. Bodenheimer, 84 Winchester, died June 24, 2008, at the Villages of Jackson Creek in Independence, Mo. He was born May 4, 1924, at Matewan, West Virginia, the son of Numa and Lula Boggs Bodenheimer. He was a World War II Navy veteran who, as an under-water demolitions team member, participated in numerous invasions in the South Pacific with the 15th Fleet, including Tarawa, the Solomon Islands, Tinian, and the Philippines. Following the war he played minor league baseball in the Mountain State League and worked as a professional boxer before settling down in Kansas City, Mo., where he became a Master Machinist. He lived the last few years in Winchester. Fred married June Lee Furrell April 23, 1951. He was preceded in death by his wife and brothers, Frank and Ted. Survivors include his sister, Nora Busby, Olathe, and brother, Bob, Darlington, S.C.; his children, Lee and Debbie Bodenheimer of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Jim and Nelda Bodenheimer, Winchester, Karl and Julie Bodenheimer, Kansas City, Mo., and Dee-Ann and Peter Enslin, Merriam; and 15 grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the New Hope Christian Church, 5704 Norfleet, Kansas City, Mo., Monday, June 30. It is the family’s wish that Fred be remembered through God’s Storehouse in Meriden. Margaret L. Frakes Margaret L. Frakes, 96, Valley Falls, died June 24, 2008, at Jefferson County Memorial Geriatric Center at Winchester. She was born July 23, 1911, at Summerfield, the daughter of Alois and Mary Ellen Byrne Wenzl. Margaret graduated from Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Valley Falls and from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in Atchison in 1928. She received a Kansas teaching certificate in 1931. She had been a clerk for the Kansas Highway Patrol when she retired in 1973. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church at Valley Falls, St. Mary’s Altar Society, the Valley Falls Historical Society, Pleasant Valley Home Demonstration Unit, and a founding volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Margaret made and gave many layettes for Birthright of Topeka. Many Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and patchwork wool quilts were among her creations. She married Charles L. Frakes July 12, 1933, at Valley Falls. He died Sept. 10, 1965. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lucy Marie Frakes, Oct. 23, 1952; four brothers, Phil Wenzl, Paul Wenzl, Carl Wenzl and Gene Wenzl; and a sister, Bertha Burns. Survivors include four sons, Ed Frakes, Fremont, Calif., Ralph Frakes, Albuquerque, N.M., Don Frakes, Valley Falls, and Joe Frakes, Bratenahl, Ohio; three daughters, Betty Reichart, Plattsmouth, Neb., Anna Hosler, Valley Falls, Jenny Elder, Havensville; 33 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was June 28 at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church in Valley Falls. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Patterson Chad M. Patterson, 41, Tucson, formerly of Perry, died June 14, 2008. He was born at Forbes Air Force Base, Topeka, Oct. 18, 1966. He has resided in Tucson for the past two years where he has been self-employed as a carpenter. He is survived by his wife, Annette; a son, Joseph I. Molina; his father and stepmother, Kenneth M. and Lucy Patterson, Perry; his mother and stepfather, Sheila and Jon Thompson, Kansas City, Mo.; sisters, Angie Bloom, Lecompton, Jaime Payne, Ft. Irwin, Calif., Shannon Hartnett, Shawnee, and Tara Hartnett, Kansas City, Mo.; and a brother, Mark Patterson, Perry. Private services were held at Evergreen Mortuary, Tucson. Zimri Enos A memorial service for Zimri Allen Enos will be held Saturday, July 5, at 11 a.m. at the Enos farm at 8954 22nd Road near Perry. Mr. Enos died June 3 in Los Angeles. He was born in rural Perry Feb. 15, 1941, to Allen and Marjorie Enos. After graduating from Perry High School as salutatorian and Kansas State University, he had a 22-year career as an Air Force navigator on KC-135 air refuelers. He lived in Merced, Calif., for over 30 years. His post-Air Force career was multi-faceted, including working on flight simulators, teaching, and working with vegetables. After retirement he worked summers in several of the nation’s national parks. He was an active member of his community, a soccer coach, and volunteer educator. He was married to Terry Ross, who was from Great Falls, Mont., from 1973 to 1991. He is survived by his three children, Casey, Ryan, and Erika; one grandson; his mother, Marjorie Enos, Perry; three sisters; and three brothers. Bonnie Brickhouse Bonnie Jean Brickhouse, 65, died June 23, 2008. She was born Feb. 12, 1943, in Marion, the daughter of Roland and Myrtle Fox Pracht. She grew up in Elmdale and graduated from Elmdale High School. She then attended Clark’s Business School. She married Larry Brickhouse Jan. 18, 1964, in Elmdale. They traveled with the Air Force and returned to Topeka in 1980. She worked for the Topeka Public Library for 10 years where she was instrumental in developing the Red Carpet and Talking Books service. She received her bachelor’s degree in social work from Washburn University. She also worked for the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging and for KTWU. She was the founder, director and counselor with the Topeka branch of Survivors of Suicide, a member of the Artists Associated, Unity Church of Christianity and Tecumseh United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband; daughter, Angie Feyh; one granddaughter; and a brother, Ronnie Pracht, Newton. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tania Lynn Brickhouse. A funeral service was held June 26 at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home. Burial was at Prairie Grove Cemetery in Cottonwood Falls. June 26, 2008, at her home after a long illness. She was born Sept. 21, 1951, at Holton, the daughter of Frank Edward “Pinky” and Velma Ramsey Martin. She graduated from Denison High School in 1969. Kathy had worked at Oldham’s Processing Plant, Jackson County Nursing Home and Merry Manor, all in Holton. She had attended Lakeview Faith Chapel at Holton. She married Robert D. Oestmann on Nov. 12, 1980, at Oskaloosa. He died on July 26, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include a son Micheal Moore, Hoyt; a daughter, Jody L. (Danny) Carlisle, Topeka; a brother, Kris (Misty) Martin, Hoyt; two sisters, Susie (James) Webber, Leavenworth, and Kathryn (Dennis) Smith, Valley Falls, and one grandson. A graveside service was at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at the South Cedar Cemetery, four miles south of Denison. Visitation was from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Sunday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Online condolences are at www.mercerfuneralhomes.com Marjorie “Marge” L. Schoonover Marjorie “Marge” L. Schoonover, 88, Valley Falls, died June 27, 2008, at a Topeka hospital. She was born June 30, 1919, at Haxtun, Colo., the daughter of Schuyler and Adelaide McClurg Spurlock. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1937, attended the University of Kansas for one year and later received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Washburn University. She was an elementary teacher for 47 years, retiring from the Valley Falls School District in 1984. Prior to that she had taught at Fairview, New Century, Bolton, No. Nine, Blue Mound, and Rock Creek rural schools. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she had served as a deaconess and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the National Education Association, Kansas National Education Association, women’s auxiliary of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a member of the Bloomfield Club, Blue Mound Club, Delaware Quilters and the Jefferson County Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She was an honorary member of the Forget-Me-Not Club. She was honored as Grand Marshal of the 2004 Jefferson County fair parade. She married Gifford O’Neil “Neil” Schoonover at Valley Falls Feb. 2, 1947. He died May 8, 1986. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Mack Bellamy, and five sisters, Mary Clements, Charlene Fox, Alice Montieth, Lois Howard, and Jean Marsden. Survivors include a son, William “Bill” L. Schoonover, and a daughter, Sarah Jane Hollis, both of Valley Falls; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A funeral service was held July 1 at the First Christian Church in Valley Falls. Burial was at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Leona O’Dell Leona Frances Sharp O’Dell, 90, Higginsville, Mo., formerly of Marshall, Mo., died June 25, 2008, at Meyer Care Center in Higginsville. Born Oct. 18, 1917, in Pittsburg, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Walker Sharp and Velma Myrtle Bryant Sharp. She married Woodrow W. “Woody” O’Dell Aug. 18, 1943, in Las Angeles, Calif. He survives of the home. They moved to Marshall soon after World War II and moved to John Knox Village East in Higginsville in 1999. Leona graduated from Higginsville High School and received her bachelor’ degree in business education and her master’s in vocational education from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Leona taught school for 27 years, beginning her teaching career in Lexington, Mo., where she taught for two years. She also taught part time at Blackburn and Missouri Valley College. She retired in 1984 from Marshall Public Schools, where she taught business education at the high school and the vocational school. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Missouri Business Education Association, Missouri Vocational Association, Marshall Chamber of Commerce and was a lifetime member of Missouri State Teachers’ Association. She was also a member of Marshall Chapter 408, Order of the Eastern Star, served as Worthy Matron of the Marshall chapter and held the office of Grand Chaplain in the Missouri Order of the Eastern Star. Additional survivors include two daughters, Sharon L. Branson, Ozawkie, and Carol Ann Strodtman, Independence, Mo.; four grandchildren; one stepgrandson; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin J. Sharp, Merle Sharp and Lowell Sharp; one sister, Velma Mischon; and one stepsister, Vanita Smith. Funeral services were July 2 at First United Methodist Church in Marshall. Burial was at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Paul Milton Hefty Paul Milton Hefty, 94, a long-time resident of Dewey and Bartlesville, Okla., and a former county commissioner died Friday, July 27, 2008, in the Jane Phillips Medical Center. Paul was born to Walter J. and Rose E. (Schadt) Hefty on a farm north of Valley Falls, Kansas on December 26, 1913. He received his elementary education in a one-room rural school, riding a horse to and from school. Paul graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1931 and then farmed with his father for three years. He attended Emporia State College for one year and became an eight-grade, one-room school teacher for 27 students. Paul attended Kansas State University for three years graduating with a bachelor’s degree and honors in Mechanical Engineering. He ran the two mile in track, was voted into Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Tau, and Steel Ring Honorary Scholastic Societies. He started working for Phillips Petroleum Company in 1939 and married Iris Ellen Moore the same year. He advanced to supervising construction engineer in 1963. Through his career he and Iris moved between Bartlesville and Texas four times, Canada, England, and Belgium while he worked on the refinery and pipeline construction. After 38 years of service to Phillips, Paul retired in 1977. He and Iris worked on the construction of the Dewey United Methodist Church for two years. Paul served as the District One County Commissioner for four years during that time he replaced 26 unsafe bridges around Copan Lake. He has planted and maintained a five-acre bird sanctuary in Bartlesville City Park, maintained two roadside beautifications, and tree plantings. Paul carried the Olympic torch in Bartlesville in 1984 on its way to be carried in all the states. He was a past committee member of the 66 Federal Credit Union Loan Committee and the Supervisory Committee. Paul was a board member of the Family Crisis and Counseling Center, a Washington County alliance for the mentally challenged. He organized the Bartlesville Area Friends of the Parks, was a NRA certified firearms safety instructor. Paul was very active in his church, he was teacher and youth counselor, he was a certified lay speaker, he was on the Oklahoma Conference Board of church and Society and the Oklahoma Annual Conference. Paul was one of the founders of the National Rifle Associations’ Wildlife, shooter and police training complex near Raton, New Mexico. He was a life member of the American Forestry Association, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, National Rifle Association and the Santa Fe Gun Club of Raton. He received the outstanding citizen award from the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce; he worked 32,000 hours as a hospital volunteer. Singing was his joy, he arranged for special music three out of the four Sundays every month, he was part of the choir singing solos, duets, and quartets. He was in the Camp Egan Men’s Camp Quartet and enjoyed singing with the Bartlesville Area Community Singers. Paul is survived by his wife, Iris, two daughters Coleen Saylor of Eldorado Hills, CA., and Rosalind Price and her husband Gary of Olathe, KS., Five grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Ruth McKibben of Monroe, Ohio, and Lois Fowler of Topeka, KS., numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Glenn Hefty. Memorial services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday July 3, 2008 at the Dewey United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Robert and Rev. Don Simpson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Neekamp-Luginbuel Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Oklahoma-Arkansas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
