Deborah Sayers Phillips, 51, Valley Falls, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at the home of her parents in Valley Falls. She was born on Sept. 18, 1956, at Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Walter J. and Lucille I. Moore Sayers. She attended Washington High School in Kansas City, KS. Debbie had worked as a Certified Nurse's Assistant and a Certified Medical Assistant at Medicalodge in Leavenworth. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars. She married Brian Phillips on July 3, 1999, at Valley Falls. She was preceded in death by two nephews, Junior and Danny Sasse. Survivors include her husband, Brian, Valley Falls; two stepchildren, Nathan Phillips and Vanessa Phillips, both of Twenty-nine Palms, CA; her parents, Walter and Lucy Sayers, Valley Falls; three brothers, Larry Sasse, Waco, TX, Daniel (Sheri) VanHoozier and Joe (Angie) Sayers, all of Valley Falls; two sisters, Victoria (Dave) Jones, Leavenworth, and Paula (Roger) Dill, Lansing; nine nephews, eleven nieces, ten great nephews and ten great-nieces. The funeral service was at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 28, 2008, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial was at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation was from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday. Online condolences are at www.mercerfuneralhomes.com 31-1tc Amanda Haid Amanda JaNae "Mandi J" Haid, 24, of Meriden, was taken home to heaven on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in the arms of her loving mother and surrounded by her caring family. Everyone whom met, Amanda, a precious daughter, grand-daughter, niece, cousin and friend, fell in love with her because she was a very unique young lady. Amanda was born in Topeka on July 27, 1983. Amanda "Mandi" is survived by her blessed mother and best friend, Julie Haid, her wonderful grandparents, Glenn and DeLores Haid, an aunt, Sherrie (Michael) Calvin, an uncle, Steve (Christina) Haid, three special cousins, Amber, Matthew and Joshua Haid, two terrific second cousins, MaKayla and Ashton, all of Meriden and Donald Williams, a very special person, of Ozawkie. He was born Jan. 29, 1931, at Ozawkie, the son of Eldon A. and Nona Montgomery Gordon. He graduated from the Valley Falls High School and had served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church and a former member of the Valley Falls Lions Club. He had retired from the U.S. Postal Service and had worked at the Materials Distribution Center in Topeka. He married Delores A. Zimmerman June 19, 1953, at Valley Falls. She died April 12, 1994. He married Mary Lenes Dec. 7, 1997, at Rusk, Texas. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Norman Dean Gordon. Survivors include his wife, Mary Gordon; two sons, John E. Gordon and Philip D. Gordon, both of Valley Falls; stepchildren, Jeff Lenes, Little Elm, Texas, and Kelly Powers, Jacksonville, Texas; a brother, Donald Gordon, Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral service was March 29 at the Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Burial was at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Clark, 91, Meriden, died March 30, 2008, at his home in Meriden. He was born Oct. 20, 1916, on the Clark homestead in rural Meriden, the son of James U. Clark and Elizabeth F. Portz Clark. He grew up in the Meriden area graduating from Meriden High School in 1935. He married Elnora Crawford April 1, 1939. She died in 1995. He was a member of the Meriden United Methodist Church and the Meriden Masonic Lodge. He served as Jefferson County Commissioner for 16 years, was a project leader of the Meriden 4-H for several years and was a member of the Shawnee County Milk Producers Association and the Kansas Association of Soil Conservation. He was preceded in death by a brother, Valentine Clark. He is survived by a son, James R. Clark, Meriden; two daughters, Elaine Frisbie, Grantville, and Gloria Woerle, Rossville, Tenn.; two brothers, Delbert Clark, Berryton, and Walter Clark, Topeka; a sister, Ester Lortez, Berryton; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at the Meriden United Methodist Church. Interment will be at the Meriden Cemetery. Gary Cooke Gary Lee Cooke, 67, Sabetha, formerly of Tonganoxie, died March 22, 2008, at Sabetha Hospital. He was born Dec. 2, 1940, in McLouth, the son of George and Marie Stumbaugh Cooke. He attended school in Tonganoxie. He worked for Sac & Fox Casino, Powhattan. Mr. Cooke was preceded in death by a brother, Richard. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Boston, Cave Creek, Ariz. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at Northridge Church, Sabetha. Private inurnment will be at Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie. Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie, is in charge of arrangements. D. Mildred Butler D. "Mildred" Butler, 101, Oskaloosa, formerly of Leonardville, died March 31 at the Jefferson County Geriatric Center in Winchester. She was born July 20, 1906 in Kiowa County, the daughter of Bret Harte and Anna Mae Crebs Isham. She had lived in Oskaloosa for 30 years. Mrs. Butler was a homemaker and farm wife for many years. She formerly taught school in one-room school houses in rural Kansas. She was a 1923 graduate of Haviland, High School and received her teaching certificate from Hays Teacher's College. She was a member of the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. She married Lester D. Butler May 11, 1938 at Keats. He preceded her in death in 1968. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Francis, Ironton, Mo., and Jo Cross, Oskaloosa; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, William Hart Butler, one daughter, Doris Berger, three grandchildren, two brothers, and three sisters. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. at the Riley Cemetery. Visitation was from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
