Ron Scott

Ron Scott, 75, Emporia, died at St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita Feb. 26, 2008. He was born Nov. 25, 1932, at Larned, the son of Ralph and Ninan Shumate Scott.

He married Dolores R. Srajer June 7, 1954, at Tampa. She survives of the home. Mr. Scott was a psychotherapist. He began his career with the Larned State Hospital and then became director of the Mental Health Center at Great Bend. He was with the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas at Emporia and later with Catholic Charities in Emporia. He also maintained a private practice at various times. He had been retired since the fall of 2006.

Mr. Scott was a graduate of Larned High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in agronomy from Kansas State University and a master’s in social work from the University of Missouri at Columbia. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from June 1955 to March 1957, stationed in Arizona. He was a former member of the Jaycees in Larned, the Duplicate Bridge Club in Emporia, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Other survivors include a son, Richard Kevin Scott, Houston, Texas; three daughters, Debra Lynn Scott, Branson, Mo., Pamela Kay Fillmore, Cottonwood Falls, and Rebecca Jan Nottingham, Ozawkie; three brothers, Daniel Scott, Winston-Salem, N.C., Richard Scott, Wichita, and Kenneth Scott, Newton; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Scott.

A memorial mass was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church March 1. Memorials have been established with the Pat J. Bosco Achievement Leadership Scholarship at Kansas State University or the H. Helen Rodgers

Helen Rodgers, 84, Topeka, died Feb. 29, 2008. She was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Topeka, the daughter of Arthur R. and Edith M. Peterson Johnson.

She lived in Topeka most of her life and is a graduate of Topeka High School. She worked at Stormont-Vail Hospital in admissions and later as a business manager, retiring in 1983.

Preceding Helen in death were a sister, Melvina Jean Johnson Moore; and a son, Rodney L. North Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Kinder Bradshaw; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Newman. Mrs. Rodgers will lie in state after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday one hour prior to the service. Amy Cawley

Amy Louise Cawley, 96, Olathe, died Feb. 28, 2008, at Providence Hospital in Kansas City. She was born Aug. 15, 1911, northwest of Valley Falls, the daughter of Thomas and Mary McAsey Cawley.

She graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., as a registered nurse, received a BSN at St. Louis University, and later a master’s degree from Yale University. She served in World War II as a Navy captain in public health and also taught public health at several universities.

She lived in Lawrence, from 1998-2005 and attended Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

Brothers Thomas Cawley Jr. and Paul Cawley and sisters Sr. Anne Cawley, OSB, and Maureen Wenzl preceded her in death. Many nieces and nephews survive, including Father Tom Cawley, Independence, Mo., Bob Cawley Eudora, and Marie Ice, Lawrence.

Mass of Christian Burial was March 5 at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church in Valley Falls. Burial was at the church cemetery. Lyle Clark

Lyle Warner Clark, 80, Baldwin City, died Feb. 25, 2008, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born March 24, 1927, on the family farm at Clearfield.

He attended Pleasant Oak Grade School near Clearfield and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1944. He attended the University of Kansas two years.

He married Mary M. Kalb July 28, 1957 at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City. They shared over 44 years of marriage before Mary died April 13, 2002.

Mr. Clark farmed and operated an agricultural lime hauling service for many years. He then bought Clark’s Rock Quarry from his father and later co-owned Killough-Clark Inc. in Ottawa. He sold his share of the business in the early ’70s.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City. He was also a board member and treasurer of the Tauy Creek Watershed for over 25 years. Lyle received the Banker’s Association Soil Conservation Award in 1991.

He is survived by one daughter, Sandra Kramer, McLouth; one son, Jay Clark, Ottawa; two sisters, Jean Clark, Portland, Ore., and Darlene Thurlo, Raytown, Mo.; and five grandchildren. One sister, Pat Simmons, preceded him in death. Funeral services were March 1 at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City.

Interment was in the Deay Cemetery, south of Eudora. Memorial contributions can be made to the church and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 64, Baldwin City, 66006.

Daniel V. Goodman Jr.

Funeral services for Daniel V. Goodman Jr., 71, Ozawkie, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in Muncie Cemetery, Ottawa.

Mr. Goodman died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at his residence, after a long illness. He was born April 16, 1936, in Aberdeen, S.D., the son of Daniel V. Sr. and Sophia Longbull Goodman. He graduated from Provo High School, Igloo, S.D., where he led the Provo Rattlers to the 1954 basketball championship.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964, and played on the Army football team. He later graduated from the Utah State Police Academy. Dan moved to Lawrence and graduated from Haskell Indian Junior College and attended Kansas University. Mr. Goodman served as a deputy for the Kickapoo Nation Tribal Police.

He also served as a security guard for Haskell Indian Junior College, and was employed by the City of Lawrence as a maintenance technician for several local apartment complexes. He was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and an honorary member of the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas. He bowled and played for Special Populations teams, and was a member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, KU basketball, watching sports, and spending time with his wife.

Survivors include his loving wife, Cathy Spooner, of the home; two daughters, Yvonne Marie Goodman, Lawrence, and Melody Elaine Rothleutner, Box Elder, S.D.; two sons, Ron Brave, Lawrence, and Wesley Dillon, Rapid City; a brother, Cedric, Pine Ridge, S.D.; and seven grandchildren, Chant and Inilia Brave, Jupiter, Mileena, and Shadow Spooner, Curtis Williams, and Shawna Dillon. He was preceded in death by a son, John, and two brothers, Vincent and Herb.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Provo High School Alumni Fund, in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com.

Houston W. Cowan

Houston W. Cowan, 67, Oskaloosa, died March 2, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. Mr. Cowan was born June 1, 1940, at Maverick, Texas, the son of Royce M. and Nadine Lee Cowan.

He had lived in rural Oskaloosa 23 years. He was a heavy equipment operator for Hamm Construction for many years and worked through Union Local No. 101 of Operating Engineers for many years. He retired in September 2006. He was a 1959 graduate of Buffalo (Mo.) High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965.

He married Christel Lynn Mowery Aug. 13, 1981, at Miami, Okla. She survives at the home. He is also survived by his mother, Nadine Cowan, Osage City; one son, Ronald Anderson, Chanute; two daughters, Angela Cowan, Oskaloosa, and Sarah Cowan, Topeka; three brothers, Doyle Cowan, Globe, Ariz., and Russell Cowan and Dale Cowan, both of Osage City; one sister, Joyce Walker, Las Vegas, Nev.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Cowan, in 1985.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. A visitation was held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Family inurnment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Perry. Memorials can be made to the Houston Cowan Memorial Fund to be designated later and sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
