Arline Deeken

Arline M. Pohl Deeken, 77 , Wathena, died at her home Feb. 14, 2008. She was born April 28, 1930, in Wathena, to Albert and Daisy Bittiker Pohl.

She was a lifelong resident of Wathena and worked as a secretary until she married. She then became a homemaker.

She married John H. Deeken March 1, 1955. He survives of the home. She was preceded in death by brothers Clarence Pohl and Irving Pohl, a sister, Maxine Young, and grandson, Scott Deeken. Other survivors include a daughter, Paula Nolan, Wathena; two sons, Rodney Deeken, McLouth, and Ronald Deeken, Wathena; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Marjorie Martin, St. Joseph, Mo., and Dorothy Scrooc, Redondo Beach, Calif.

A visitation was held Feb. 16 at the Harman Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena. There will be no public funeral services. Private inurnment at a later date. Memorials can be made to Wathena EMTs and Alzheimers Association and sent in care of the funeral home P.O. Box 426, Wathena, 66090.

Ralph Perry

Ralph H. Perry, 88, Manhattan, died Feb. 8, 2008, at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan. He was born April 20, 1919, in Oskaloosa, the son of Arthur D. and Margaret Hamilton Perry.

He had been a Manhattan resident since 1946. Mr. Perry’s college career was interrupted while serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 until his discharge in 1945 as a master sergeant in the finance department. He then returned to Kansas State University and in 1946 completed his degree work. He then began his work in the comptroller’s office. In 1953, he became the university comptroller, a position in which he served with distinction for the next 32 years. He retired April 23, 1985.

Mr. Perry was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, a life member of the Kansas State University Alumni Association, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 17 in Manhattan.

He married Edythe E. Goodwin Nov. 26, 1942, in Oskaloosa. She survives of Manhattan. Other survivors include two sons, James A. Perry, Wilmington, Del., and Edward Perry, Mountain View, Calif.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Perry in 1997, and one brother, David A. Perry.

Ralph Buttron

Ralph Buttron, 98, of Nortonville, KS died Wednesday February 13, 2008 at the Winchester Geriatric Center under hospice care.

Funeral services were at 3:00 PM on Saturday February, 16, 2008 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Nortonville, KS, with Rev. Michael Van Velzer officiating. Burial followed in the Nortonville Cemetery. A visitation was held prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the St. Matthew Lutheran Church and may be left in care of the O’Trimble funeral home. Ralph Buttron was born on June 7, 1909 on the family farm in Nortonville, KS the son of Frederick J. and Louise Salome (Moeck) Buttron. He attended Didde Elementary School in rural Nortonville and graduated from Nortonville high School in 1927. After graduation he farmed on the family farm.

Ralph enjoyed gardening and in his retirement years was always ready for bingo and dominoes. He was baptized as a child of god on October 17, 1909 by Rev. Timpken. He and his siblings received their rite of confirmation on February 17, 1929 in the St. Matthew Lutheran Church with Rev. E.F. Guenther presiding.

Mr. Buttron was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Carl and Harold Buttron, one sister; Mildred Nolting, and a nephew; Robert Buttron. Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Don and Linda Buttron of Nortonville, Ken and Regina Buttron of Atchison, Cathy Nichols of Nortonville, Charlotte and Malcolm Gigstad of Everest, Edward and Linda Buttron of Nortonville, Melvin and Emily Nolting of Nortonville, Sarah and Bob Scholz, St. Peters, MO; and several great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends. 25-35-1tc

Howell Dean, “H.D.” Wyatt

Howell Dean, “H.D.” Wyatt, 101, Topeka, formerly of Valley Falls, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at Brewster Place Health Center.

H.D. was president of the Kendall State Bank in Valley Falls from 1970-1971. He had also served as Vice-President and Director. He had been president of the Citizens State Bank in Valley Falls from 1947-1964. He was a Sinclair Refining Agent in Valley Falls from 1928-1942.

H.D. was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, where he was past president of the church board and chairman of the financial committee. He served as mayor of Valley Falls for twelve years and was a charter member and past president of the Valley Falls Rotary Club. He was a charter member of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084 Veterans of Foreign Wars, was past president and treasurer of the Valley Falls Community Club and past secretary-treasurer of the Valley Falls Cemetery Association.

He was a member of the Kansas Bankers Association, a Master and Life Member of the Kansas Masonic Lodge, a 76 year member of A.F. & A.M. Lodge 236 at Meriden and the former A.F. & A.M. Lodge 21 at Valley Falls. He became an Abdullah Shriner in 1934 at Leavenworth. He was a 50 year member of the International Order of Odd Fellows No. 86 in Valley Falls.

He was born Oct. 23, 1906, at Mt. Washington, Jackson County, MO, the son of Ulysses Vinson and Lizzie Patterson Wyatt. He graduated from Belton High School in 1924 and from Central Methodist College at Fayette, MO in 1928.

H.D. was a U. S. Navy Lieut. in World War II. He was stationed at Port Orchard at Seattle and served sixteen months as a fuel officer in the South Pacific.

He married Mary Ellen Noland, on June 15, 1929, at Kansas City, KS. She died on Jan. 19, 2002. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur W. Wyatt on Oct. 30, 1975, and Paul V. Wyatt, on Feb. 25, 2005. Survivors include a nephew, J.R. Wyatt and his wife, Peggy, Rocky Mount, MO; a sister-in-law, Katie Wyatt, Claremont, CA; five nieces, Susanne Wyatt, Walnut Creek, CA, Courtney Krakauer, Healdsburg, CA, Mary Pat Wyatt-Voelckers, Douglas, AK, Sister Barbara Noland, El Quince, Guatemala, and Marian Keltner, Las Vegas, NV, and four cousins, Blanche Hare, Ft. Worth, TX, Rebecca Krieg, Grand Prairie, TX, Alan Wilhite, Bellingham, WA and Lee Wilhite, Gladstone, MO.

A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial will be in the Valley Falls Cemetery with Masonic Services. Military Honors at the cemetery will be conducted by Grahem-Herbers Post 3084 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m., Thursday, until service time. Eugene Wade

Eugene Z. “Gene” Wade, 88, Grantville, died Feb . 14, 2008. He was born Feb. 21, 1919, at Ontario, the son of William Z. and Elsie M. Wade.

He attended grade and high school in Circleville. Mr. Wade served in the 35th Infantry Division in World War II from Dec. 23, 1940 to Oct. 6, 1945. He spent 16 months in Europe. He was a member of the Grantville United Methodist Church, Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Perry American Legion Post No. 142. He retired from the Postal Service in Topeka in 1978 with a total of 36 years of federal service.

He married Dorothy Daugherty April 11, 1948, by the same minister who married his parents. His wife survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Kathy Wade Gordon, Topeka; a son, Kevin Wade, Grantville; a sister, Elsie Wells, Holton; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a foster daughter, Jill McMillan, Topeka. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Wade and Richard Wade.

Funeral services were Feb. 18 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, Topeka. Philip Billard Post No. 1650, of the VFW conducted military honors at Grantville Cemetery.
