Harlow Myers

Harlow Elton Myers, 93, Ft. Collins, Colo., died Jan. 6, 2008, at a hospital in Ft. Collins. He had complications from pneumonia.

He was born Jan. 13, 1914, at America City, the son of Leslie and Grace Higgins Myers and spent his early life and school days at America City. He garduated from Havensville High School. He was a self-employed auditor and farmer while living in Oskaloosa and Tonganoxie areas and was the owner and operator of a retsaurant in Colorado. He was a born again Christian.

He married Joy G. Coltharp January 1941 in California. She survives at Winsor, Colo. Other survivors include a daughter, Debra J. “Heidi” Patel, Ft. Collins; a son, Rick L. Myers, Camarillo, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary H. Myers in 1996.

Services were Jan. 12 at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa.

Marjorie Weeks

Marjorie Elizabeth Walker Weeks, 93, Council Grove, died Jan. 9, 2008, at the Council Grove Healthcare Center.

She was born March 29, 1914, in Halstead, the daughter of Harvey and Minnie Ayers Huffman. She had lived in Council Grove since 1947. She attended Berean Baptist Church. She worked in Council Grove and Emporia in the restaurant business, and also worked at the Council Grove nursing home.

She married Ralph Walker in 1938 and helped him refurbish and repair furniture. He died in 1980. She then married Lloyd Weeks in 1985. He died in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ethel Zurbuchen, Edith Hefling, and Maxine Bohrer. Survivors include a daughter, Lea Page Walker, Council Grove; step-sons, Clifford Weeks, McLouth, and Lloyd Dean Weeks, Iola; six stepgranddaughters; one stepgrand-son; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services, under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Council Grove Chapel, were Jan. 12 at the Berean Baptist Church. Interment followed at the Homestead Cemetery, Chase County. Memorial contributions can be made to the Berean Baptist Church and can be sent in care of the funeral home, 137 N. Union Street, Council Grove, 66846.

Evelyn Osborn

Evelyn Elizabeth Osborn, formerly of Shawnee , died Jan. 13, 2008, in Valley Falls. She was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Kansas City, to Fred and Emma Bean McCarty.

She was a 1935 graduate of Argentine High School. She married Edwin Samuel Osborn Feb. 11, 1944. They were married 53 years until his death and lived in Shawnee for over 50 years. She was a member of Bristol Hill United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Tirzah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Fredrick McCarty. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Rider, Valley Falls; a son, Gary Osborn, Olathe; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Jan. 16 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Burial was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Kansas City. Memorial contributions can be made to the Jefferson County Health Department’s “Bath Buddy Program,” 1212 Walnut Street, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Eleanor Quinlan

Eleanor D. “Ellie” Quinlan, 73, of Grantville, died in peace and grace at her home, just as she lived every day of her life.

She was born August 4, 1934, in Kansas City, MO., the daughter of George P. And Agnes C. Dabner Neal. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents.

Ellie was a 1951 graduate of Bishop Hogan High School in Kansas City, MO. And attended St. Mary College in Leavenworth. She was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Perry.

To carry on the memory of her unending love, she leaves, but will always watch over; her loving husband of 48 years, Lawrence “Bud” Quinlan, of the home, her daughter Patty Quinlan, Perry, KS., and her daughters, Becky and Marie; her daughter, Mary Gorden and husband, Gary, Perry, KS., and their children, Elizabeth and husband, Harry, and children, Stephen, Sean, Joshua, and Emme, Christopher and his son, Tristan, Amanda and Annie; her Son, Tom Quinlan and wife, Kari, Glen Rose, TX., and their children, Anna and Josiah; her son, Pete and wife, Christina, Grantville, KS., and their children, Nicholas, Shane and Caidon; her Daughter, Anna Barrett and husband, Gene, Grantville, KS., and their children, Payden and Ella; and her dear sister and friend, Mary Anne Saathoff and husband Dick, New Port Richey, Florida.

Ellie’s selfless acts of love touched many and she always kept close to her heart, her dear friends, beloved nieces and nephews, “honorary” children and grandchildren and all the many family pets she cared for.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Thursday at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Perry. A Rosary will be recited at 9:40 AM, Thursday, prior to Mass at the Church. Leo James Hards

Leo James Hards was unexpectedly taken away Fri., Jan. 11, 2008. He was born February 24, 1943, to the parents of Leo Hagen and Hazel Alberta Hards. He was the third child of four.

James graduated from Meriden High School, Meriden, KS in 1962 where he excelled at sports. He later served a tour in the United States Navy.

He married Ede Bomar and was blessed with a son, Shannon of Lawrence, KS. They later divorced. He is survived by two sisters, Ruby Nelson and husband, Dean, Topeka; Mona Norfleet and husband, Buster, Mobile, AL; a brother, Butch and wife, Jan, Topeka, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his second wife, JoAnn Hards and his close friend, Sharon Walker.

He was employed by GoodYear Tire and Rubber for 36 years and retired July 2006.

Nancy Heath

Nancy Rae Heath, 68, Oskaloosa, died Jan. 14, 2008, at the Jefferson County Geriatrics Center in Winchester.

She was born Dec. 15, 1939, at Atchison, the daughter of Eldon Rae and Jennie Lynn Meador Shufflebarger.

She was a 1957 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and was a 1960 graduate of Stormont-Vail Nursing School in Topeka. She was a registered nurse and retired from the Colmery-O’Neill Veterans Medical Center in Topeka after 13 years of service.

She married Charles F. Heath Dec. 27, 1964, at Oskaloosa. They were divorced. Survivors include her mother, Jennie L. Shufflebarger, Winchester; her daughter, Julie Lynae Kelly, Oskaloosa; a brother, Jerry Shufflebarger, Oskaloosa; and four grandchildren.

Services were Jan. 18 at the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Memorials can be made to the Oskaloosa Public Library or to Jefferson County Hospice and sent in care of the Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Rev. Philip Riley

The Rev. Philip Eugene “Gene” Riley, Independence, died Jan. 16, 2008, at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Neodesha.

He was born May 19, 1925, at Coffeyville, the son of Robert F. Riley and Nell Martin Riley.

He started school in Neodesha where he graduated in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy where he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After his service he attended and graduated from Baker University in 1949. He then taught music in schools in eastern Kansas. He graduated from Iliff School of Theology in 1957. He pastored many churches in the eastern Kansas area with the United Methodist Church until his retirement in 1990. After his retirement, he served as a supply pastor for several area churches.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence, the Mid-Continent Band, the Monday Music Club, and was a member of the Neewollah Campers.

He married LaVerne Schuman Dec. 18, 1947, at Baldwin. She survives at the home. Additional survivors include a son, Philip David Riley, Lawrence; a daughter, Annette Condon, Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Riley, Bella Vista, Ark.; and two sisters, Lucille Hall, Powhattan, and Lois Johnson, Bella Vista.

Funeral services were Jan. 19 at the First United Methodist Church in Independence. Private interment will be at the Neodesha City Cemetery under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel of Independence. Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Independence.

Gale Hewitt Sr.

Gale Wayne Hewitt Sr., 44, Effingham, died Jan. 18, 2008, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born Sept. 25, 1963, in Leavenworth, the son of John and Lois Jeffries Hewitt. He attended schools at the Howard Wilson Grade School and West Junior High in Leavenworth and attended Valley Falls High School. He also took classes at Cowley Community College. He was the owner of his own concrete and construction company.

Gale and Sondee Crawford were married March 30, 1981, in Oskaloosa. She survives of the home. Other survivors include three sons, Gale Hewitt Jr., Glen Hewitt, and Justin Hewitt, all of Effingham; a daughter, Kristin Hewitt, of the home; his parents of Valley Falls; a brother, John Hewitt Jr., Valley Falls; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were Jan. 21 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville. Burial was in Wise Cemetery, Winchester. Memorials can be made to the Kristina Hewitt Education Fund and sent in care of the funeral home.

James Raymond

James B. Raymond, 83, Valley Falls, died Jan. 21, 2008, at Valley Health Care Center in Valley Falls.

He was born March 18, 1924, at Farmington, Conn. He had worked at the Ford Motor Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Mo., and at General Motors in Detroit. He was a non-combat veteran of World War II, building landing runways in Canada.

He married Patricia Pudeck in 1950. They were divorced.

A committal service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
