Oskaloosa’s newest restaurant isn’t your everyday Mexican restaurant. The main reason is Derek Ong, the half-Chinese, half-Native American operator of the eatery. Ong, a native of Arizona, brought with him to “El Chino Bandito,” which he translates as “The little Chinese bandit,” a menu of authentic dishes developed by his family back when they owned five Mexican restaurants in the Phoenix area. The name is a twist on the “El Bandido” name of the family’s Mexican restaurants.
