Township turns to public for answers as cost rise

by Clarke Davis

The cost of paying the bills to maintain the Delaware Township Hall is outstripping the income and something has to be done to turn it around.

That’s the message from Earl Stevens, township clerk, who said the township board wants the community to help search for solutions.

Stevens described the building as under-used and some of those who do use it don’t pay.

“We are dipping into reserves to pay utility bills,” Stevens said.

The board raised taxes to gain an additional $2,000 in next year’s budget to help somewhat with the shortfall, but Stevens said there’s not money for roof repairs and larger maintenance items that will be needed someday.

The present charge for use of the building is $15 for two hours plus $5 for each additional hour.

The federally funded agency that provides meals for senior citizens does not pay for use of the building and the Boy Scouts are not charged.

The board has considered setting a fee or asking for donations from the people who eat at the hall.

“If anybody has some good ideas, we’d like to hear them,” Stevens said.

It will be Jan. 1 before the board acts. Raising the rental rates, increasing taxes, or a combination of both are being looked at.

Serving on the board with Stevens are Maxine Hefty, who maintains the calendar, and Bob Zieg. Stevens will be leaving the board in January and will be replaced by Mary Jane Burns.
