Earlis Moore

Earlis Edward Moore, 86, Lake Charles, La., died Sept. 7, 2009, at a local hospital.

Mr. Moore was born, raised, and educated in Oak Ridge, Mo. His parents were Edward and Eula Lape Moore. He served the U.S. Army and Air Force for 14 years and was a World War II veteran.

He lived in Meriden and Perry for many years. He lived the past five years in Lake Charles.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth Jordon Moore, of the home; six children, Wayne Moore, Gayle Roosendaal, and Kenneth Moore, all of Lake Charles, Ronna DeJaynes, Perry, Faye Starkebaum, Carbondale, and Leslie Crispin, Topeka; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Leroy Moore and Ervin “Nub” Moore, both of Cape Girardeau, Mo.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services with military honors were Sept. 10 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Lake Charles.

Philip L. Luthi

Philip L. Luthi, 70, Tecumseh, Mo., died Sept. 12, 2009, at Ozark Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 14, 1939, at Miltonvale, the son of Frank M. and Hazel F. Luthi. He graduated from Ozawkie High School in 1957.

Phil retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in 1988. He had also been a farmer and stockman in the Delia Community.

He was married to Charlotte Huggins. They divorced.

He was married to Willa J. Martin on Oct. 31, 1975, at Holton. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Terry Luthi, Emporia, and Barry Luthi, Topeka; a step-daughter:, Melissa Delzeit, Troy; mother, Hazel Luthi , Topeka; four brothers, Frank Luthi Jr., Francis Luthi, and Warren Luthi all of Topeka, and Duane Luthi, Zephyrhills, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Loren; and a son, Jerry. Graveside services were held Sept. 15 at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Grove.

Charles De Armond

Charles “Chuck” R. De Armond, 83, La Porte, Ind., died Sept. 4, 2009, at his home.

He was born June 1, 1926, in Marion, Ind., to Charles W. and Elizabeth Beetle De Armond.

Mr. De Armond owned Chuck’s Books Used and Antiquarian Book Store, La Porte. He bought, sold and traded books for 20 years, fulfilling a dream he shared with his father. In 2002, he and his wife sold the business and traveled to Arizona to be with family. In 2007, they returned to La Porte. He continued his hobby of selling books on eBay until his death.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he fought in the Pacific Theater for the islands of Peleliu and Okinawa and was in the landing at Inchon and the drive north to the Chosin Resivoir.

He served his country for 26 years retiring as a U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Colonel.

He was a past member of the La Porte VFW. On July 24, 1994, he gave the address for the Korean War Monument Dedication in Soldiers’ Park at La Porte.

He married Patricia Schrick April 29, 1975, in Orange, Calif. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Greg Curtis, Riverside, Calif., and David Curtis, Yuma, Ariz.; one daughter, Deena Pulaski, La Porte; one brother, John Weigle, Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Bess Tompkins, Aurora, Ill.; five grandsons; and three granddaughters. His mother-in-law, Ellen Schrick, lives in Valley Falls.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Ernie Weigle and LeRoy Weigle.

A funeral was held Sept. 9 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, La Porte.

A full military honors service was held by the La Porte Honor Guard and members of the U.S. Marine Corps. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Marilyn Rees

Marilyn Jean Rees, 65, rural Grantville, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009. She had cancer.

She was born Nov. 5, 1943, the daughter of Roland and Jean Ross.

She grew up in Perry and was a graduate of Perry Rural High School. It was there she met her future husband, Jack Rees. She attended the University of Kansas briefly and then Kansas State University and claimed KSU as her alma mater.

She married Jack Rees in 1962 in Manhattan. They established their home in the Grantville area where Jack worked with his father at Rees Fruit Farm and later managed Skinner Garden Store. He survives.

Marilyn was a homemaker.

Other survivors include her children, Curtis Rees of Montana, Cameron Rees, Topeka, and Jennifer Rees Day, Lawrence; five grandchildren; and a brother Jim Ross, Osage Beach Mo.

For many years, Mrs. Rees worked as the office manager for Aeschliman State Farm Insurance. She was active in the Grantville United Methodist Church and served as chairwoman of the church council. She also served on the board of directors at the Ronald McDonald House. She also served as a volunteer library assistant at Most Pure Heart of Mary School.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Grantville United Methodist Church. Family visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. The service will be followed by fellowship and refreshments.

Raymond Dickey

Raymond C. Dickey, 63, Meriden, died at the Veterans Hospital in Topeka Sept. 13, 2009.

He was born July 7, 1946, at Kansas City, Mo., the son of Raymond E. and Velma Bartlett Dickey.

He lived in Osawatomie as a youngster.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

One of his proudest moments of his time in the service was when he called for a helicopter to come and airlift him out of a firefight. The helicopter pilot and co-pilot were both wounded, and even though Ray was not trained as a pilot, he flew them all to safety.

He worked for the city of Farmington, N.M., for over 35 years. He returned to the Topeka area in 1991.

He was a lifetime member of Meriden VFW Post No. 10815.

He married Gaylynn Karns Jan. 29, 1999. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a stepson, Darrick Karns, Topeka; a son, Christopher Slade; brother, David Dickey, Denver; and two stepgrandsons.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon “Sonny” Dickey.

Mr. Dickey was cremated. A memorial visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Davidson Funeral Home.

Private family inurnment will be held later at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Neosho Rapids.

Dorothy Funk

Dorothy T. Funk, 93, McLouth, died Sept. 10, 2009, at the Hickory Pointe Care Center in Oskaloosa.

She was born March 10, 1916, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Ernest and Charlotte White Gilbert.

She was a lifelong resident of the McLouth and Oskaloosa area. Mrs. Funk was a homemaker.

She was a member of the McLouth United Methodist Church and the Williams-Kesinger American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 393 in McLouth. She was a 1933 graduate of Oskaloosa High School.

She was married to Robert Francis Funk on July 12, 1943, at Oskaloosa. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1973.

Survivors include one son, Bob Funk, McLouth; one daughter, Barbara Peterson, Turner; a sister, Ruth Kimmel, Gladstone, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at the McLouth United Methodist Church. Burial was at McLouth Cemetery.
