William Hirbour

William R. (Bill, Bob or Herbie) Hirbour, 66, died June 16, 2009, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born Aug. 17, 1942, at Newark, N.J., the son of Wilfred and Mary Whittaker Hirbour. He graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, Tetterboro Aeronical School, and Allen County Community College.

He served four years in the U.S. Air Force with one of those years in Vietnam. He worked for the 190th Air Refueling Wing at Forbes with a tour in Desert Storm and several active-duty trips. He retired from Kansas Air National Guard in 1992 with the rank of master sergeant. He then worked for Dobler Surveying until June of 1998.

He was a member of the Robert Heizer Post No. 198 of the American Legion in Osage City and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 15017.

He married Illa Thorp Oct. 10, 1965, in Valley Falls. She survives. They moved to Osage City in 1973.

Other survivors include three daughters, Denise Leakey, Topeka, Brenda Eckart, Wamego, and Debbie Barber, Rose Hill; four grandchildren; one sister, Katherine Kaconas, Chase City, Va.; and one brother, Raymond Hirbour, Richfield Spring, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernadette Wellington.

Services were June 19 at VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City. Interment was at Nortonville Cemetery.

Military graveside services were conducted by an Honor Guard from Whiteman Air Force Base.

Memorial contributions can be made to Kansas Dialysis Services, Midland Hospice or Boy Scouts and sent in care of the funeral chapel at 107 N 6, Osage City, 66523.

Bernice C. Malicke

Bernice C. Malicke, 93, of Leavenworth, KS, passed away, Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 AM, Friday, June, 19, 2009 at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in the Mooney Creek Community of Winchester, KS. Burial followed in the Corpus Christi Cemetery.

A parish rosary was recited at 7:00 pm, Thursday, with visitation until 8:30 pm at the O’Trimble Funeral Home, 325 Main, Nortonville, KS.

Bernice was born on June 18, 1915 in the Mooney Creek Community, the daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (Noll) Schrick. Bernice graduated from Winchester High School in 1932. She was a devoted homemaker and mother who enjoyed flower gardening. Bernice was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Leavenworth.

Bernice was married to Casmer Malicke on May 8, 1941 in Mooney Creek and she lived on the family farm there while Casmer served in the military during WWII. In 1946 they moved to Leavenworth where Bernice was an Avon representative. Mr. Malicke preceded her in death on January 20, 1990. Bernice’s parents and four brothers, Eugene, Gerald, Herbert, and Ralph Schrick also preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children, Charlotte Whitfield and her husband, Ken, Shawnee, KS and Joseph Malicke, Mooney Creek; three grandchildren, Dustin, April and Jared Malicke; two great-granchildren, Sheldon and Jack.

Henry Williams

Henry O’Dell “Uncle Dale” Williams, 72, Oskaloosa, died June 22, 2009, at his home in rural Oskaloosa.

He was born Jan. 11, 1937, at England, Ark., the son of Chester Thomas and Christie Elizabeth Jones Williams. He had lived in Oskaloosa many years.

He was the former owner and operator of “Uncle Dale’s” North Side and South Side taverns in Oskaloosa and “Uncle Dale’s” taverns in Valley Falls, Nortonville, and Mayetta.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1961 to 1963 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was an avid coon hunter and was the 2005 Kansas State Coon Hunting Champion. He was the 2007 Old Settlers’ Texas Hold ’em Champion.

He married Jeannine M. Subelka at Valley Falls. She survives at the home.

He is also survived by two sons, David Williams, Oskaloosa, and Kevin Williams, Houston, Texas; two daughters, Kim Heatherman, Topeka, and Dianne Scott, Olathe; two stepdaughters, Gina Holwick, McLouth, and Maggie Moore, Oskaloosa; a brother, Jerry Williams, Bonner Springs; two sisters, Irene, Bonner Springs, and Shirley Weir, Basehor; and five grandchildren.

A memorial celebration of his life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. Cremation is planned. Inurnment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Oskaloosa at a later date.

Memorials are requested to the Oskaloosa United Methodist Women and sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Mary Ann Davis

Mary “Ann” Davis, 85, Nathrop, Colo., died June 21, 2009, at home.

She was born March 25, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio, to Andrew Irving and Vera Melcher Andrews. Her family moved to Champaign, Ill., where she spent her childhood.

After high school she worked as a dental technician and when World War II came, she joined the U.S. Navy as a dental technician and was stationed at the Marine Corp Base in San Diego.

She met her husband, Joe Davis, after the war. They were married Jan. 28, 1950. He survives of the home.

They had four children, William “Bill” Davis, Salida, Colo., JoAnn “Jodi” Goggins, Nathrop, Patrick “Pat” Davis, Buena Vista, Colo., and Michael “Mike” Davis, Nathrop.

The children were mostly raised on farms near Oskaloosa and in Wisconsin. In November of 1983, when the children were grown, Joe and Ann moved to Colorado. They owned and operated Brown’s Campground in Nathrop from 1983 to 1993.

Other survivors include eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A memorial for her family and friends is pending at this time. The family has requested donations be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, Salida, was in charge of arrangements.
