Geri Harrington is now barbering two days a week in her hometown of Valley Falls.
She will be at Evelyn’s Hair & Tanning Tuesdays and Fridays.
Being a barber is a late-in-life decision for Harrington who was married to a barber.
She was a homemaker while raising four children for 12 years and then operated a day care for 10. She was employed in the school kitchen for USD 338 for 10 years and then decided to get training at the Wichita Barber and Beauty School.
She joined her husband, Dave, in their Atchison shop and worked with him for 10 years until his death July 1, 2015. Dave had been a barber for 28 years.
“I couldn’t go back. There were just too many memories,” she said.
Geri’s sister-in-law, Tracy Harrington, shared her salon for six months in Meriden.
“She was really gracious to do that, but I wanted to come home and be closer to the grandchildren,” she said. “One is playing ball and a couple like to come here after school.”
Geri moved to Valley Falls when she was 11 years old, the daughter of Ed and Ann Riedel. Her father opened a body shop, which he operated until retirement.
She and Dave raised four children and Geri has nine grandchildren ranging in age from 3 to 20.
Evelyn’s Hair & Tanning is owned by Lori Grollmes, who has retained the same business name once used by her aunt, Evelyn Allen.
Lori, a beautician, is in the salon Wednesdays, Thursday mornings, and Saturdays. She is joined on Saturday by beautician Melissa McAfee. Melissa once had her own shop down the street from the salon.
