While Planner I Erin George is away on maternity leave, administrative assistant Cheryl Wilmington will be filling in for her at the Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Department’s office in the basement of the courthouse.
Wilmington began her temporary assignment Dec. 22 and has thoroughly enjoyed the experience thus far.
“I’m learning so many cool things,” she told the paper Monday afternoon. “I’m loving it.”
A native of Lubbock, Texas, Wilmington worked in the banking industry for 10 years, then operated an in-home Christian day care center for 27 years, first in Texas and later in Olathe.
She and her husband of 33 years, Jim, have three children who are now married and two who are still in school, Kathryn, 14, and Katie Dawn, 13. He is employed by the University of Kansas.
The family moved to the Oskaloosa area in August. In her free time, Wilmington likes to be around her family, sew and let her six pet sugar gliders entertain her with their antics.
Once George is back to assist Planning and Zoning Administrator Sam Henderson with his duties, Wilmington wouldn’t mind landing a full- or part-time job somewhere else within the courthouse.
“I’ve met some really nice people,” she said.
