Tom Ryan accepts the Donna J. Kidd Award from Jocelyn Lyons, executive director of the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging. His daughter Mary is on the right.

Executive Director Jocelyn Lyons made the presentation to Ryan, who has served on the JAAA board of directors for 14 years, serving multiple terms as chairman.
“Everyone who knows Tom recognizes that he always works for what he thinks is best, not only for JAAA, but also for the people the agency serves,” Lyons said. “Whenever he learned of something that he thought would help seniors, he embraced it.”
“Tom’s imprint is undoubtedly on every aspect of JAAA — our building, our programs, and our people,” she said.
Ryan, 80, came to Valley Falls from Kansas City to farm with an uncle when he was 16 years old. In the mid-1980s he and his late wife, Marcella, converted a barn into a bed and breakfast inn.
The award is named for JAAA’s first executive director, who served the agency for 20 years.
JAAA serves Jefferson, Shawnee, and Douglas counties.
