Floors specialty of new Oskie business

Former Tonganoxie resident Bill Allen, who has been laying floors for the past 30 years, went into business for himself last week when Floors -N- More opened in Oskaloosa, filling the vacant space most recently occupied by a NAPA auto parts store.
Floors-N-More, which is located at 515 Walnut Street, officially opened for business June 8. Allen and the two men who work for him can install carpeting and tile, hardwood and vinyl floors — that accounts for the “Floors” in the name — but they also have the ability to put on vinyl siding, seamless gutters and roofs, thus the “-N- More” that follows “Floors”.
Before the store could open, Allen found himself in the position of having to do some remodeling inside the one-story building, not to mention a fair amount of cleaning up, as, according to him, clutter in the form of unwanted metal racks and other items was much in evidence. He turned to his wife, Janet, and their three daughters, Carol, Cassie and Carissa, for some assistance with the remodeling and to Jerry Casebier for some much-needed help in dealing with the clutter. “If it wasn’t for him, I still wouldn’t be open,” he said last Thursday morning, grateful for the aid.
All three girls went to school in Oskaloosa. Carol, the oldest, is getting ready to become an accountant for a credit union in Kansas City. The next in line, Cassie, will be working at the store, freeing up her father to go bid on possible jobs when he’s not overseeing the efforts of the men in his employ. “I try to hire people who are just as picky as I am,” said Allen, who indicated that he intends to “do things differently” by focusing more on quality and less on quantity in attempting to meet the needs of customers.
Cassie, whose last name is Michaels, has a daughter, Annabelle Michaels. She is rapidly approaching her second birthday.
The Allens’ youngest daughter, Carissa, is a student at the University of Kansas.
The family moved here from Tonganoxie in 1987.
Before starting Floors -N- More, Allen worked at Midwest Carpet Center in Tonganoxie for close to 30 years.
Allen is still in the process of trying to build up his inventory but is convinced that given the choice between driving to Oskaloosa or driving to Tonganoxie, Leavenworth, Atchison, Lawrence, Topeka or even just Perry to pick out carpet, many Jefferson County residents would prefer to do the former, all other things being equal. With that in mind, he said he is “trying to accommodate” the varying tastes of the local population as much as possible.
Floors-N-More’s hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
The business has a presence on Facebook at www.facebook.com/floorsnmore515.
The telephone number for the store is 785-574-1500.
