It’s tomato planting time

Tomato King

Bill King, owner of Valley Lawn & Garden, has always been the Tomato King, but this year the numbers are staggering. He and Nina Adams (both pictured) have sprouted from seed and potted in excess of 10,000 tomato plants. The garden behind the business contains 450 plants to produce tomatoes for the business and the rest are potted for sale. There is a large variety, including 49-day and 54-day tomatoes that were planted April 1 for those in a hurry. The seed beds (pictured) are on a heated mat in the greenhouse and will sprout a seed in five to six days. Off the mat, the seed sprouts in nine or 10 days. Nina puts the plants in containers once they have sufficient leaves. Bill has filled mineral tubs to plant strawberries so he can sit in a chair and care for them. And there’s plenty more for the gardener, including asparagus, rhubarb, and blueberry bushes just to mention a few.
