Changes planned for Oskaloosa pool

By Jared Speckman

The city council amended their decision to keep the pool open until early September at last Thursday’s city council meeting and is planning immediate upgrades to the pool areas.

Originally, the council decided to order additional chemicals and keep the pool open on weekends only until Labor Day weekend.

After further discussions with pool manager Alana Kasparek, a more cost-effective decision was made to close the pool last Sunday, Aug. 18, and not order the additional chemicals.

At the Aug. 1 meeting, Kasparek mentioned that the number of swimmers will continue to dwindle and that getting enough lifeguards is usually a tough task when most of them leave for school.

“It’s a matter of public safety,” Mayor Eric Hull said.

According to Hull, the pool did come in $16,000 under budget this year and the money will be put toward upgrading the pool house and the bathrooms almost immediately.
