Mike Baxter has been named the county’s new emergency management director.

Baxter assumed his duties as the EMD June 1 and will split duties as a paramedic and the Emergency Management Director for the county.

Baxter was appointed to the position by the county commission and will serve at their discretion. “I’m excited for the opportunity within the county,” Baxter said. “It’s a great county to work in. I’m excited to work and help enhance their services.”

Baxter replaces former Emergency Management Director Doug Schmitt. Baxter has six years of experience as a paramedic in Jefferson County.

Baxter already has some changes and improvements in mind for the county and its volunteers.

“I’d like to offer more training,” Baxter said. “A more unified operation in getting all the fire districts and ambulance better trained. I’d like to see better preparedness countywide.”
