George W. New, Jr.

George W. New, Jr., 94, of Holton, died Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Medicalodges Jackson County nursing home in Holton.

He was born June 18, 1918 at Homewood, the son of George W. and Hazel M. Adams New. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1937.

George served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1946 and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He was employed as an electrician by KP&L for a number of years and was a life long farmer and stockman. Along with his spouse, he built several homes in the Meriden area. He was a member of the Polled Hereford Association for many years, the V.F.W. and N.F.O.

George married Opal M. Herring on June 19, 1943 at Wichita. She preceded him in death on May 13, 2003.

Survivors include a son, Gary (Karlene) New, Holton; a daughter, Karen (Gene) Curtis, Holton; two brothers, Fred (Donna) New, Meriden, and Wayne (Marynell) New, Princeton; five grandsons, Shane (Kelli) New, and Brian (Nicki) Curtis, all of Holton, Jarred (Jenny) New, Colorado, Traves (Donna) New, Hoyt, and Bret (Jeanette) Curtis, Basehor, and twelve great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 6th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will follow in the Holton Cemetery. George will lie in state at the funeral home where family and friends will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
