Kenneth C. Gates, 81, Perry, formerly of Oskaloosa, died July 22, 2012, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
He was born May 16, 1931, at Iola, the son of Dwight Leonard and Ruth Bebee Colwell Gates. He was a 1949 graduate of Iola High School and a 1951 graduate of Allen County Community College.
He worked as a maintenance foreman at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Topeka for many years, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa and a member of the Perry Masonic Lodge No. 415 A.F. & A.M., Order of Eastern Star chapter No. 62 in Oskaloosa, the Arab Shrine and Arab Shrine Clown Unit in Topeka, and the Fidelity Shrine in Lawrence.
He served in the Kansas National Guard for several years.
He married M. Berneice Shumaker March 10, 1952, at Medford, Okla. She survives at the home.
Other survivors include a son, Kevin Gates, Coppell, Texas; two daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” S. Johnson, Topeka, and Kendra K. Kennedy, Perry; one brother, Phillip Gates, Lebo; two sisters, Viola R. Nott, Topeka, and B. Bel Grimsley, Americus; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Gates Wright.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Barnett Family Funeral Home, 1220 Walnut (U.S. Hwy 59), Oskaloosa.
