Esta Susanna Ferrell, 94, formerly of Valley Falls, passed away peacefully July 8, 2012, at ClareBridge Assisted Living in Plymouth, Minnesota.
Esta was born near Onaga, Kansas, on April 25, 1918, the daughter of Daniel and Ethel Taylor Mumaw. Her parents moved to the Holton area to farm in 1924. She attended Holton schools until her parents moved to a farm near Denison in 1932. She graduated from Denison Rural High School in 1934. The family moved back to Holton in 1934.
Esta attended Clark’s Secretarial School in Topeka. She worked for Adams Bros. Sales Book Co. in Topeka for a year.
She married James Ferrell on March 10, 1940, at the home of Esta’s great-uncle Rev. George Taylor in LaCygne, Kansas.
James and Esta lived on the Ferrell homestead near Valley Falls and farmed for many years. Esta assisted her husband when he was a land appraiser in Nebraska and Iowa. She also worked in the appraiser’s office at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Oskaloosa.
Esta was longtime member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women – Martha Circle, Kanza Study Club, and Swabville Club. She was also chairman of the Bishop’s Roundup for Hunger Board of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church for a number of years. She was a founding board member and longtime volunteer of the church’s Clothes Closet.
Esta was a lover of the great outdoors. She liked gardening, mowing the yard, milking cows, driving a tractor for various jobs – anything in the outdoors. She had been known to work in the garden in the evenings with the yard light on.
Due to her husband’s poor health the couple moved to Valley Falls in 1998. Jim died on February 15, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Dean Mumaw, and sister, Alta McGuire. After living briefly in Topeka, Esta moved to Minnesota in 2006.
Survivors include her three children Jerry (Lorraine) Ferrell, Des Moines, IA; Wayne (Alyse) Ferrell, Valley Falls, formerly of Peoria, Illinois; and JoAnne (Chuck) Lewellen, Excelsior, MN: four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
