Darlene Wheeler

Darlene Thelma (Smith) Wheeler, 92, formerly of rural Nortonville, KS, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012 at the Brandon Woods Nursing Home, Lawrence, KS.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville. Burial followed in the Nortonville Cemetery.

Darlene was born, the only daughter of Dan and Anna Mae (Keller) Smith, on March 17, 1920. She attended Valley Grove and McLouth Public Schools. She worked in the Lawrence and Oskaloosa area until she married Norris E. Wheeler on May 14, 1943.

She worked alongside her husband on the family farms and was active in community groups and organizations. Darlene loved being outdoors, working in the yard and garden. She was diligent about canning and preserving the produce and fruit she grew. She loved flowers and took up quilting later in life. Darlene loved KU Basketball and reading the newspaper each day. She was an avid letter writer and kept in touch with high school friends up until her last months of life.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norris, three brothers, Rollin, Alvin and Lawrence Smith and a grandson, Robert Wheeler. She is survived by her sons, Phillip (Mary) Wheeler of Prairie Village, KS; Warren (Phyllis) Wheeler, Dale (Lisa) Wheeler; daughter, Martha (Dean) Nieder, and her brother Leo K. Smith, all of Lawrence; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
