Service held to retire flag, rededicate memorial in Valley Falls
Mayor Charles Stutesman asked the veterans to hold a memorial service in the city park at the flag pole that honors the community’s war dead from the Vietnam War. The old flag was retired and a new one run up the pole during the service. The mayor said he wanted to use the opportunity to rededicate the memorial and again pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Holding the flag are Merle Pickerell, left, and Steve Bain, who served in the roles of junior vice commander and senior vice commander, respectively, for the annual services held at the Valley Falls Cemetery earlier in the day. Jerry Tullis, commander of the Grahem-Herbers VFW Post, is standing at right. The VFW also provided a venue for disposing of old flags.
