Relay for Life of Jefferson County is scheduled for June 8 at the Stan Braksick Sports Complex in McLouth. The event begins at 6 p.m. with closing ceremonies at midnight.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event that last year raised $4.3 billion for research and services.

Relay for Life of Jefferson County is part of the High Plains Division which includes Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Hawaii.

In 2011, the High Plains Division:

• allowed 403 children with cancer to attend summer camps last year.

• was able to award 99 childhood cancer survivors with scholarships worth $50,000. Ten of those recipients were in Kansas.

• funded 90 cancer research grants totaling more than $52.5 million in the High Plains Division ($2.5 million in grants are currently at KU). As the largest source of non-governmental cancer research funds in the United States, the ACS has invested more than $3.6 billion in research since 1946

• 80 percent of the money contributed to the society is used for research, patient services and education programs.

Locally, these services were provided to over 52 Jefferson County residents. The remaining balance is broken up with only 17 percent going into fundraising and 3 percent into administration.
