New times, new signs for Oskaloosa
by Dennis Sharkey
Oskaloosa USD 341 Schools have a lot to boast about and they’re going to show it off in a couple of new ways.
Travelers heading southbound on U.S. 59 Highway and eastbound travelers on K-92 Highway will soon be greeted by new signs welcoming visitors with the accomplishments of students.
Superintendent Jon Pfau told the Oskaloosa City Council last week that the signs will be in place sometime this month.
The sign on U.S. 59 Highway will be located in the grassy area where the school currently has a marquee but closer to the highway.
The school currently has a sign on the east side of the road that is weathered and in bad shape. Pfau said that sign will be removed.
The K-92 sign will be located in a grassy field across from the fire department on land owned by Westar.
A location for a third sign for travelers coming into town from the south and the east still has not been determined. Pfau said there was a sign for travelers coming from the south but the sign fell down on its own about three years ago.
The idea for new signs came from a line of questioning Pfau received from residents and parents after the school’s volleyball team won their first state championship in October 2010.
“I’m excited about the process of this,” Pfau told the council last Thursday, June 7. “Everywhere I would go someone would ask, ‘When’s the sign going up?’ I didn’t realize that we needed to do that.”
Pfau said after further study he discovered that the district had several state championships in academics such as Knowledge Bowl and FBLA.
The sign will have a school color theme with blue being the base color for the sign.
The sign is designed in a way that championships will be listed with placards and there will be space for additional championships to be added in the future.
“We would like to see more go up in the future,” Pfau said.
