Meals on Wheels headed to Heartland track for fundraiser

The organization that races to the homebound in Shawnee and Jefferson counties every day with a hot meal is taking over Heartland Park Topeka Drag Strip Friday, June 22.

In an event called “Pedal to the Metal,” anyone with a steering wheel or handle bars—motorcycles are also welcome—will have access to the strip to test their driving skills and have a good time in the process.

“This is a unique fundraiser for us but we believe with the popularity of racing there will be a lot of interest,” said Heidi Pickerell, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels.

The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. For the $40 admission fee, participants will have the opportunity to “drag the strip” as many times as desired and will receive two drink tickets and dinner.

Other activities at the track will include live music, a climbing wall, whack-a-car event, and a racing simulator. There will be plenty to eat and drink as well.

MOW provides 1,000 hot meals to participants five days a week and sponsors 13 meal sites in the two counties.

“A person will be able to fulfill a dream by testing their reaction time off the starting line in their own vehicle, while knowing they are serving a good cause at the same time,” Pickerell said.

MOW is in the process of trying to expand its service by providing meals on more days while at the same time dealing with cuts in government funding. More than a third of its operating budget comes from the generosity of the community at large.

“This soccer mom has checked the tires on her car. I hope I don’t need a new set when this is over,” she said.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the MOW office, all Capital City Bank locations, and at meals-on-wheels-inc.org. Driving rules can also be found at the website. For questions, call 785-670-2434.
