Marie C. Nieman

Marie C. Nieman, 86, of Nortonville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

She was born February 3, 1926, to Gustav and Elizabeth (Walz) Gigstad. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1943 where she took normal training classes to be a certified teacher. Marie taught in several area one-room schoolhouses for eight years.

Marie married Edward C. Nieman, Jr. on May 25, 1947. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2003.

Marie was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where she was an organist and member of the LWML. She made many pies, cakes and salads for dinners and sales. Marie was a stay-at-home Mom who worked hard growing a huge garden to provide food for her family, helping Eddie on the farm, and sewing clothing for her and her daughters.

Marie was a proud charter member of the Farmerettes Extension Unit since 1952. She was the secretary/treasurer of the local chapter of Aid Association for Lutherans and served on the election board for many years. The family enjoyed playing cards and games and she enjoyed watching all kinds of school activities.

Survivors include children Sandra (Ken) Balsters, Bethalto, IL, Mark (Becky) Nieman, Nortonville, Janet (Dave) Olson, Hiawatha; grandchildren Hailee Nieman and fiancée Kris Schmidt, Luke (Dana) Nieman, Ty Nieman, Jeremy (Sarah) Olson, Brett Balsters, Taylor Olson, great-grandson, Bentley Nieman; brother, Albert Gigstad; sister, Mildred Hawk; in-laws, Leona Gigstad, Charles Foster, Charlene Gigstad, Naomi Nibblelink, Elaine Saffels, Lois Llewellyn, Doris Sloop; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents, Marie was preceded in death by brothers, George Gigstad and John Gigstad; sisters, Irene Toedter and Evelyn Foster, and granddaughter, Erica Olson.

Funeral services were held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Nortonville on Saturday, May 26. Burial was at the Nortonville Cemetery.
