Lady Bears turn rare play in semifinals loss

by Dennis Sharkey

The Oskaloosa Lady Bears softball team ended their season by finishing fourth place in the Class 2A state softball tournament but gave fans a reason to cheer.

The Lady Bears lost in the semifinals to top seed Udall.

With the game tied at two runs each in the fourth inning Udall loaded the bases on two successful bunts. A ground ball got by second baseman Brooke Beach that scored two runs.

Once again the bases were loaded with no outs and two runs in. Udall junior Abby Hoffman hit a line drive to Beach and all runners were going. Beach quickly threw to first base to double off the runner. After a moment of confusion the first baseman fired the ball over to senior Haley Pfau to record the third out of the play and the Lady Bears escaped the inning without further damage.

Udall showed off some stellar defense of their own in the next half inning to keep Oskaloosa off the scoreboard. The Udall third baseman made a great diving stop play to rob Pfau of a hit. A running catch by the right fielder also robbed pitcher Lakin Thompson of an extra base hit.

Udall went on to add three more runs for the final 7-2 score.

The Lady Bears beat No. 4 Spearville in the quarterfinals 4-0 to advance to Saturday behind some great defense.

Thompson often times would paint herself into a corner with runners in scoring position only to get a big strikeout or defensive play to preserve the shutout.

In the bottom of the sixth the Lady Bears clung to a 2-0 and got a running catch by Beach to get the first batter.

The next batter reached on a single but a bad throw on a pick off attempt had everyone scrambling. The play was backed up by right fielder Shyan Wright and the runner was gunned down at second base trying to advance. The Lady Bears added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning for a cushion.

The Lady Bears ran out of gas in the third place game and fell 11-0.

The Lady Bears made it to the state tournament in Head Coach Lisa Braun’s first season and for the first time since 2001.
