James Joy

James “Jim” Luther Joy, 79, died May 26, 2012, at Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born Feb. 9, 1933, at Golden City, Mo., to Robert Shands and Mildred Lois Moss Joy.

He married Mary Jane Parsons March 30, 1952, at Springfield, Mo. She preceded him in death Nov. 27, 1997, at Grantville.

They had three children: Jeanie Schuler, Catherine Herring and Joseph Joy, all of Topeka.

Mr. Joy married Marledeen Volle May 26, 2001, at Grantville and added three stepchildren: Richard Volle, Grantville, Janet Erickson, Meriden, and Donna Fields, St. Marys.

He is survived by 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, William Joy, Springfield, Mo.

He graduated from Willard (Mo. )High School in 1950. He was a retired sheet metal worker for Union Local No. 77. He was a tournament bass fisherman who was successful on the BASS tournament circuit at its beginnings in the 1970s.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at the Grantville United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Grantville Cemetery. The family received visitors at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Grantville United Methodist Church. Barnett Family Funeral Home is in charge of services.
