Hayworths to face jury trial in October
by Dennis Sharkey
A Jefferson County couple will face a jury trial for an alleged shooting near Valley Falls.
John Hayworth Jr. is charged with first degree attempted murder for allegedly shooting William Schoonover on Dec. 4, 2011.
His wife, Bernadine, is charged with obstructing apprehension of the prosecution. Prosecutors are alleging that she tried to kick a cell phone out of Schoonover’s hand after he was shot.
Both are scheduled to go on trial before a jury the week of Oct. 23 through Oct. 26.
John Hayworth Jr. is represented by Topeka attorney Don Hoffman. Bernadine Hayworth recently changed her attorney to high profile Topeka attorney Pedro Irigonegaray.
Irigonegaray is known for representing controversial figures or organizations. He represented Planned Parenthood through legal battles against former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline.
Hayworth is accused of shooting Schoonover as he was working in a field. The two men allegedly had words before Schoonover was shot. He is accused of saying “I’ve always tried to be good to you but I’ve had enough.”
