Duane Sheaffer

Duane Harvey Sheaffer, 75, Perry, died at his home May 30, 2012.

He was born on a farm near Dunlap, the son of Frank and Margaret Sheaffer. He graduated from Dunlap Rural High School in 1954 where he excelled in sports.

He served in the U.S. Army in France and upon returning, he began a 35-year career at Hallmark Cards. He started in the Emporia plant and moved to the new facility in Lawrence in 1962, where he held various management positions.

He married Shirley England, Olpe, Aug. 4, 1959. They have two sons, Robert Sheaffer, Ottawa, and Ron Sheaffer, Perry, and a daughter, Kay Sheaffer, Perry. The couple also raised a niece, Margaret Fowler, Lawrence. He is survived by five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn Farag.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Sheaffer, and sister, Ruth Elberson.

Funeral services were June 5 at Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to a local food pantry, Jefferson County Hospice, Douglas County VNA, or a charity of choice.

Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
