Chip and seal work moving along on Jefferson County roads

by Dennis Sharkey

Jefferson County Commissioners had a light schedule on Monday but had time to get an update from Road and Bridge Director Francis Hubbard.

Hubbard reported that his road crews have already finished many of the chip and seal projects for this year.

Projects are completed on the north end of Wellman Road and on 118th Street east of Wellman. Projects have also been completed on Rogers and Wise roads.

Crews will begin working to chip and seal the south end of Ferguson Road this week.

Hubbard also reported that a portion of Coal Creek Road will be shut down between 27th and 35th streets for a pipeline crossing repair.

A second traffic study was conducted on Northwind Drive to determine if speeds would change if checkpoints were set up farther apart.

Speeds increased by about one mph but an overall average of 31.7 mph.

First District Commissioner Lynn Luck asked Hubbard if “children at play” signs or something similar could be installed. Hubbard said the county only installs signs that deal with regulations such as speed limit and stop signs. Hubbard said residents can purchase their own signs if they choose.
