The Center Place will host Underground Railroad author

The Center Place, Oskaloosa, will host speaker, author, and historian Todd Mildfelt at a free community lecture at its Little Red Barn at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1.

His topic will be “The Underground Railroad on the Western Frontier.”

Mildfelt has presented at Lecompton’s Constitutional Hall to capacity crowds. He was a presenter at the National Underground Railroad Conference in 2010 and at the Symphony in the Flint Hills in 2011. He has authored “The Secret Danites: Kansas’ First Jayhawkers” and a book for young readers, “Wagon Train to Freedom.”

The latter is based on an Underground Railroad trip from Lawrence during the summer of 1860 led by the Rev. John Stewart.

Mildfelt is a teacher for Greenbush and has taught for 29 years.

Donations for food and presentation are appreciated and will assist The Center Place in providing future family activities. Bring lawn chairs.
