Election for 340 bonds
by Clarke Davis
Voters in Jefferson West USD 340 have an election Tuesday, April 3.
The school board is putting a $3.3 million bond issue before the public to accomplish a number of things from improving facilities to upgrading technology.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at two locations, St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Meriden and the Ozawkie City Hall.
A citizens committee began meeting over a year ago to explore the district’s needs and come up with a proposal that was accepted by the school board.
The process was timed to come on the heels of paying off the bonds that built the high school. Those bonds will be paid off this year and the new bond issue, if it passes, will be on next year’s tax bill.
The board is expecting the bond issue to run about 8 mills a year for a period of eight years. Patrons have been paying 9 mills or more on the high school bonds.
Under the current state school finance laws, state funds will pay for about 40 percent of the bonds and interest.
