Oskaloosa Bears searching for new coaches

by Dennis Sharkey

Both of the Oskaloosa basketball teams will have new head coaches next season.

The Oskaloosa USD 341 board accepted the resignations of boys’ Head Coach Drew Kraxner and girls’ Head Coach Scott Whaley earlier this month.

Whaley will continue to coach in the capacity of the head football coach and junior high track and field coach.

Superintendent Jon Pfau said Whaley needed a break in the school year because he was coaching all three seasons.

Whaley took over two years ago after former Head Coach LeAnn Tufte moved on.

Kraxner just completed his first year as head coach after spending a year on the bench assisting former Head Coach Rod Stottlemire. The team won only one game this past season.

Pfau said Stottlemire is not interested in returning as coach. Stottlemire also serves as head coach for baseball and assistant coach for football.

Pfau said the search will be opened up to current teaching staff. The district will be hiring some new teachers this year and a new coach could come from one of those hires. The last option would be a rule 10 hire.

In other actions:

The district approved a calendar for the 2012-13 school year. Pfau said the calendar is almost identical to this year’s calendar.
