Wife of alleged shooter now charged

The wife of a man accused of shooting his neighbor is now being charged with a crime.
Bernadine A. Hayworth, rural Valley Falls, has been charged with aggravated battery for the Dec. 4 incident.
Her husband, John Hayworth, was arrested and charged with attempted 2nd degree murder intentional. He was later released on a $50,000 bond with property used as a surety bond.
Bernadine Hayworth was arrested and released on a $10,000 bond.
The charges resulted from an incident in which John Hayworth allegedly approached the victim, Bill Schoonover, while he was doing chores. Hayworth allegedly shot Schoonover one time in the chest.
Bernadine Hayworth, according to Sheriff Jeff Herrig, allegedly kicked Schoonover in the head after he was shot.
Hayworth was the first person to call 911 at 10:36 a.m. that Sunday morning.
Both of the Hayworths remained at the scene until authorities arrived. Bernadine Hayworth was not arrested at that time.
The Hayworths and the victim live less than a mile from one another about five or six miles southwest of Valley Falls and both own adjoining land.
Authorities believe that the confrontation derives from a dispute over a common fence and cattle getting in or out.
Schoonover was shot with a .357 Magnum. Hayworth had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
No court date has yet been scheduled.
Schoonover was recently released from the hospital.
