Valley Falls man given probation for stabbing incident
by Dennis Sharkey
A Valley Falls man will spend the next three years on probation for stabbing a friend.
Brandon K. Smelser was sentenced by District Judge Gary L. Nafzinger in October to 36 months probation and 60 days in jail. Smelser was released from the Jefferson County Jail two weeks ago.
Smelser stabbed Chris Daniels after the two got into an argument on July 9.
According to the court records Smelser says that he “has no conscious memory of stabbing Chris.”
The records say the two are longtime friends and that Daniels would testify that he does not want Smelser to face prison time. Furthermore the records say that Smelser is “thankful Chris is recovering,” and that he is willing to pay all of the medical bills.
Smelser pleaded down to attempted voluntary manslaughter from attempted second degree murder intentional.
Smelser had been in jail since July 9. Part of his sentencing will require him to perform 200 hours of community service work and alcohol treatment.
