K-4 collision takes life

Fatal accidentOren Long Sr., 87, a Valley Falls farmer, died of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision about 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at the north intersection of Highway K-4 and 16.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s report, Long was southbound on K-4 and making a left turn when he collided with a northbound van driven by Lyle Wellman, 72, Oskaloosa.

The van was owned by the Jefferson County North school district and contained an 11-year-old passenger. Wellman and his passenger were not injured.

Long was transported to St. Francis Health Center in Topeka where he later died from his injures. He was driving a 1998 Buick LaSabre.

Both Jefferson County and District 11 ambulances were on the scene.
