Edward Gergick Sr.

Edward J. Gergick Sr., 87,Tonganoxie, died Dec. 2, 2011, at his home.

He was born Aug. 22, 1924, in Kansas City, the son of Peter and Kathryne Novak Gergick.

As a boy, he and his brothers helped their father deliver the Kansas City Star in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City. He retired from Sealright Co., Kansas City, after 28 years. He attended Ward High School.

He received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds he received as a U.S. Army infantryman in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie. He was a member of the Heart of America Game Breeders Association, a lifetime member of the Kansas Miniature Horse Club and a member of the Greater Kansas City Racing Pigeon Club. He was a pigeon fancier for over 80 years and had a family farm with a menagerie of animals affectionately called “The Zoo.”

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Peter, Joseph, and Clarence Gergick, and one sister, Julia M. Cornish.

He married Daisy M. Burkard Oct. 12, 1957, in Miami, Okla. She preceded him in death July 23, 2006.

Survivors include one son, Edward J. Gergick Jr.; three daughters, Cindy M. Werner, Winchester, Mary C. Gergick, Tonganoxie, and Theresa A. Gergick, Tonganoxie; two brothers, Ernest Gergick, Kansas City, and Robert Gergick, Leavenworth; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Dec. 7 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Memorials can be made to Sacred Heart Church Building Fund, National Kidney Foundation, or St. Jude and sent in care of Quisenberry Funeral Home, 604 E 4th Street, Tonganoxie, 66086.
