Big prize offer proves a scam

The Perry Police Department is warning people in the county about a scam it has investigated wherein a resident is sent a large check with a promise of more. All they have to do is wire money for the taxes to the United Kingdom.

Police Chief Ramon Gonzalez Jr. explains that the “prize winner” is promised $85,000 and is provided a check that exceeds the amount of taxes. Apparently the unsuspecting person who falls for the scam will wire the money by Western Union and then learns that the check is no good.

The letter names major brand stores in America from which the computer randomly picked the winner’s name.

The police chief said the envelope bears the word Sears on the right hand corner and has a Canadian postmark.

A real prize never requires someone to pay up front, but if anyone thinks their free prize is legitimate, check with legal authorities first.
