Native Plant Society to meet Saturday

The Atchison Region of the Kansas Native Plant Society has extended an invitation to everyone interested in having native wildflower events in this area to attend a planning session Nov. 12.

The meeting will be held at Mac’s Grill & Pizza in Valley Falls at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The goal is to get as many local people as possible to share ideas about wildflower events in the six-county region, reports Fred Coombs, Denison.

The region consists of Jackson, Jefferson, Atchison, Nemaha, Brown, and Doniphan counties.

“And we want to identify future native plant sites in each of these counties by the people living there,” he said.

Mac’s Grill has reserved a room for the meeting. There is no obligation to make a purchase.

The mission of the Kansas Native Plant Society is to encourage awareness and appreciation of the native plants of Kansas in their habitats by promoting education, stewardship, and scientific knowledge, Coombs said.

KNPS has organized the 105 counties of Kansas into smaller regional groups to facilitate more local wildflower events.

“This six-county Atchison Region is unique for its rich glacial deposits which nurture a variety of native tallgrass prairie plants,” he said.

“Come prepared with ideas and suggestions for wildflower and timber walks and other activities,” he said. All are welcome to attend.

The KNPS website is ksnps.org under “Events Calendar” or contact Fred or Nancy Coombs at 785-872-3463.
