James Turner

James Francis Turner, 86, Oskaloosa, died Nov. 17, 2011, at the Hickory Pointe Care Center in Oskaloosa.

He was born Jan. 25, 1925, on his farm northwest of Oskaloosa, the son of Robert Edward and Agnes Jane Trapp Turner. He was a lifelong farmer and worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation from 1971 until his retirement in 1988. He was the Jefferson County Treasurer from 1961 to 1965. He served as a bus driver for U.S.D. No. 341 in Oskaloosa for 13 years, and served on the U.S.D. No. 341 Board of Education from 1965-1969.

He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa, and was a founding member of the Lucky Spur Saddle Club. He was a founding community leader of the Jolly Juniors 4-H club, and served as a 4-H leader for many years.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Cresent Lodge No. 86 in Valley Falls, a 50-year member and Past Master of Pleasant View Grange No. 1459 in Ozawkie, the Jefferson County Pomona Grange No. 10, the Kansas State Grange and the National Grange.

He and his wife, Virginia, served as the Kansas State Grange King and Queen in 1998 and received an Appreciation Award from the Jefferson County 4-H Extension Council in 1996. He was a member and treasurer for the Fairview Cemetery board from 1947 to 2007.

He married Virginia Rose Kramer June 2, 1946, at Oskaloosa. She preceded him in death Nov. 24, 2005.

Survivors include three daughters, Theresa Jo Turner, Meriden, Jamie Lynn Klenklen, Ozawkie, and Janet Kay Brunkan, Oskaloosa; two sons, Dennis James Turner, Valley Falls, and James Edward Turner, Oskaloosa; one sister, Irene McPherson, Lawrence; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Lee Turner, Vernon J. Turner, and Floyd Turner.

Funeral services were Nov. 21 at the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery.
