Valley Falls beautician opens new hair salon on Broadway
by Clarke Davis
Melissa McAfee has opened a new hair salon on Broadway in Valley Falls.
Hot Headz Salon will offer both men’s and women’s haircuts and styling along with nail care and tanning.
The salon owner will rent space to Krista Boldra, Valley Falls, who will practice a couple days a week and do most of the nail care. Boldra once had a salon in her home.
McAfee is a Horton native and a graduate of Midway-Denton High School. Her parents, Pat and Cheryl McAfee, still reside in Horton where he used to be the school principal and also served as superintendent at Midway-Denton. Her mother is a school nurse.
Melissa said she held numerous jobs before deciding to go to cosmetology school at B Street Design in Topeka.
It was a profession she grew up with and believes her inspiration came from both of her grandmothers who had salons in Horton.
“I spent a lot of time with them,” she said.
She has three children, Rylee McAfee, a senior, Drew Maltsbarger, a freshman, and Koltyn Maltsbarger, an eighth-grader. Rylee will be the salon receptionist.
In deciding on a name for the salon, McAfee said she provided Trista Gish’s class with half a dozen names and the kids voted.
