Two air ambulances respond to K-16 wreck
Five young men from this area were involved in a one-vehicle accident that brought two life-flight helicopters to the scene early Saturday, Oct 22.
Sterling Shields, 22, Valley Falls, was the driver of a 2001 pickup truck that left the roadway while eastbound on K-16. The truck rolled numerous times and then ignited into flames after coming to rest on its tires.
Shields was taken by air ambulance to a Topeka hospital and Sean Berry-Burne, 21, Oskaloosa, was transported by air to the KU Hospital in Kansas City.
Thomas Collins, 19, Valley Falls, was transported by private vehicle to a Topeka hospital as was Dallas Mayer, 18, Valley Falls.
A fifth occupant in the truck, Jordon Sloop, 23, Valley Falls, refused medical treatment at the scene.
According to the Highway Patrol report, the accident happened at 12 minutes after midnight about five miles west of Valley Falls.
The truck left the roadway for an unknown reason and the driver overcorrected, the report states.
No one in the truck was wearing a safety restraint.
