Oskaloosa councilman dies
by Dennis Sharkey
The Oskaloosa City Council is less one member once again after the death of Councilman Greg Rockhold.
Rockhold, 53, passed away at his home in Oskaloosa on Saturday. He had been battling an illness for some time.
Rockhold, who was elected to office in April, had missed council meetings for the last two months because of the illness.
The last meeting Rockhold attended was in August. A special meeting was called to let bids on the Oskaloosa pool rehabilitation project. The project was an important issue for Rockhold.
Rockhold was born in Lawrence but graduated from Oskaloosa High School. Later he graduated from Automotive Technical School in Wichita. He was a mainstay in the Oskaloosa press box during home football games as the clock operator and was a former middle school boys basketball coach.
During city council meetings that he attended Rockhold was known as a jokester but outspoken when it came to serious issues within the community such as the pool.
Most recently Rockhold served as manager of Metzger’s Bear Essentials before the store changed hands last year.
Rockhold is survived by his wife, Kelley, of nearly 34 years, two sons, Jeremy of Oskaloosa and Kyle of Lawrence and daughter Nicole, who is a student at Pittsburg State University.
