Two lives lost in US-59 crash

Two Atchison men lost their lives in a wreck on US-59 north of Nortonville Sept. 8.

Jacob Cummins, 29, driver of a 2007 GMC pickup, and his passenger, Matthew Wilson, 23, perished when they collided head-on with a Freightliner. The pickup burst into flames.

The 2005 Freightliner was driven by John Harris, 61, Topeka. He was listed as having possible injuries.

According to the Highway Patrol report, the pickup was southbound and drifted left of center prior to the collision.

The wreck caused the highway to be closed for nearly eight hours and traffic was rerouted. Firefighters and rescue personnel from Atchison and Jefferson counties responded to the scene.

The bodies of the two deceased men were taken to a Wyandotte County coroner office for autopsies.
